What are the problems encountered in the use of literary sources for writing ancient history? Give examples

lubhan cherwoo 17th Apr, 2020

hi,

To recreate the past literary sources provide deep insight but the possibility that are highly influenced by the conditions of a writer cannot be neglected.

Explanation: The foremost problem is the credibility of the ancient literary source because the writers were patronized by royal courts and private wealthy individuals, therefore, we found a lack of criticism towards them. Historically, writing is patronized by the royal courts to justify their rule and therefore the element of bias needs to be studied carefully.

Therefore to recreate the past a historian has to not just understand the literary sources but also the context in which the source was produced.

when you attempt any piece of writing what are the key questions you should ask yourself??

Ankit Dahiya Student Expert 7th Apr, 2020
Hello,
Before writing anything it is advisable to ask questions such as
  • Purpose of writing: To inform people, criticize, appreciate, motivate someone. With the purpose in mind you will be sure about the tone and the content of the whole writeup
  • Target Audience: You should know who your readers would be and write accordingly. For example writing in layman language if readers are general public or if readers are scholars then giving technical details
  • If you have enough knowledge to write about the subject
Writing is a very dynamic subject, no hard and fazt rules are to followed, experiment and try to find your own writing style. The above questions might help at the starting.

Good luck

who does writing from a silenced perspective alter out reading of a particular text? Discuss with reference to the texts discussed in the course.

Ishita Upadhyay 20th Nov, 2020

Hello aspirant,

Silenced perspectives allow the reader to look beyond the authorial intent and then view the text.

Explanation:

Silenced perspectives are those which remain hidden in a text due to authorial bias, societal bias or the situations of the characters that are found due to plot or other concerns in the text.

To identify them, and to read through them is a fruitful exercise as it shows the picture that remains hidden under the garb of the conventional story . For ex. reading a conventional romantic story from the perspective of an outsider can reveal its irrationality and cliches.
