About Buchanan Institutions Teachers Training Institute, Pallom
BI Teacher Training Institute, Pallom more recognised as Buchanan Institutions Teachers Training Institute is an old institute, which was established in year 1865. Situated in Kottayam district of Kerala, this institute is exclusively a standalone one to prepare future generation of teachers. Recognised by the NCTE it is affiliated to a small 6.6-acre campus area out of which the institute occupies only 7 acres. Despite being a little over two decades old, BI Teacher Training Institute only admits female students and at the time this writing the institution was home to 44 students and 4 members of staff. The institute provides only one focused program related to the teacher education which proves the fact the guild is more interested in the quality of the professional preparation than the quantity of offered courses.
The institute has numerous learning resources that have been established with an aim of improving learning environment for the students. In the present study, school library has been defined as a library that stock sufficient information required by the novice teachers. The college has departmental practical facilities which are a primary component in pedagogy/training. An auditorium is provided on the campus with a limit of organizing some events and seminars enhancing the academic environment.
The institute also gives much importance to technological development and has good quality IT facilities so that students can understand and use effective tools for learning. In the same note, to enhance the comprehensive development, there are facilities for sports with a view of allowing children to exercise while studying. Interestingly, the institute offers hostels for boys and for girls Nevertheless, it is worth to note that at the present time the institute is therefore only accepting female students, which means potential for its further development of future amendments to the policy or changing the admission procedures.
BI Teacher Training Institute provides a narrow specialisation based on preparing qualified teachers. As for now, the institute has only one course to offer which is the D.El.Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education) which is a full time course extending over two years. The course is highly structured with an aim of preparing students to develop into professionally capable elementary school teachers. Though the institute has limited opportunities of degree programmes, it offers probability of providing specialised, quality education to the teachers of elementary level.
The organization structure of students’ enrolment at BI Teacher Training Institute follows its president’s policy that emphasises on the merit system as required by the state government. Concerning admission, candidates are selected through their performances in qualifying examinations or entrance tests or any other mode which is prescribed by the Kerala government. BI Teacher Training Institute, Pallom, or Buchanan Institutions Teachers Training Institute, is a well-renowned institution aiming to produce future generations of teachers as a single-gender institution, it is recognized by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and is located in the Kottayam district of Kerala. The admission process of BI Teacher Training Institute is set to recognize the most suitable and passionate candidates for their teacher education program. According to the Kerala government, the admission system followed by the institute is merit-based. It selects candidates based upon their performance in entrance tests or qualifying examinations, or any other mode specified by the state government for selection of candidates in accordance with its excellence standards in elementary school teachers' production.
BI Teacher Training Institute has an admissions time usually consistent with the school year, such that the school calendar falls between the end of July through August/ September. Though different at times, in principle, potential candidates should expect preparing applications around July and August leading up to an academic calendar. The first criteria for eligibility that must be satisfied to apply to BI Teacher Training Institute D.El.Ed program are clearing the 10+2 or equivalent exam from a recognized board. D.El.Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education): BI Teacher Training Institute offers a two-year full-time D.El.Ed course. This is the only course available so far in this institute, giving an insight into the focused approach of training on teacher education. The program is focused to prepare students to be professionally able elementary school teachers. Admission into the D.El.Ed course follows the merit basis of the marks secured in the qualifying examination and/or entrance examination as per the policy of Kerala government. The approved intake for this course is 50 students.
