About Lourdes College of Nursing, Kochi

LCN, Kochi is a self-financing professional health care institution aimed at offering degree in nursing approved in 2002. Being an affiliated college in Thrikkakara, Kochi, Kerala, this college is approved by the Indian Nursing Council INC. The campus is located on 4.22 acres of land and enable student to study and enroll in various nursing programs. LCN has 318 students and 31 members of the faculty, so the school offers an individualized educational experience. HVGC provides 8 courses under 3 level of degrees and focuses on different area of nursing. Specifically, it demonstrates that LCN is a provider of quality education by the range of courses offered, as well as infrastructural endowment in the institution.

It has a variety of college facilities in terms of academic and student amenities that are well equipped to serve the college learners. The well stocked library remains as the source of knowledge and learning by offering a favorable learning atmosphere. Students get full equipped laboratory for each nursing department from Fundamentals of Nursing, Medical Surgical Nursing, Child Health Nursing to others. Computer with 25 computers and internet helps to improve the computer literacy of the students and the faculty members. 

LCN has provided a Girls’ hostel for student convenience to stay comfortably and have well provided meals. The college also has its health center with basic first aid requirement, sports facilities and equipment, canteen and an auditorium for events and seminar. Some of the facilities available, include; Transportation services for students that are in a position to move from the college to the hospital.

Lourdes College of Nursing has various types of nursing courses for Learning Institution that meets the various needs of education as shown below. It also offers 8 complete courses that are full-time undergraduate, postgraduate programs and other related study. The B.Sc Nursing program is the main course, which has a strength of 100 students and the Post Basic B.Sc Nursing that has the strength of 20 students. At postgraduate level LCN has M.Sc in Community Health Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, Paediatric Nursing, Medical Surgical Nursing and Obstetrics and Gynaecological Nursing with total quata of 5 for each. Besides, the college also has Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) with intake of 50 students. The total student enrolment across all its program offerings is 318, thus the college upholds on ratio of students to faculties for effective training.

Lourdes College of Nursing has a few programs but they use merit system to admit students for different programs. For the undergraduate courses such as Bachelor of science in nursing and general nursing and midwifery admission is granted on the basis of mark obtained in plus two or equivalent examination. The GNM program particularly takes into account the total marks in Part III, optional subjects. For postgraduate programs which include all the specialization of M.Sc Nursing the admission is through an entrance examination conducted by the Commissioner for entrance examination government of Kerala or Supervisory committee, government of Kerala. 

The college has an inter se merit system, so it means that candidates are sorted according to the scores they got in the examinations. Specific dates for the examination are, however, not given, though prospective students are urged to visit the college website or make a communication to the admission office for special dates especially for the applications and for the exams. The alumni hereof are highly involved in the student activities hence creating a spirit of LCN Nursing and giving the students professional insights.

Kochi's Lourdes College of Nursing (LCN) is one of the premier self-financed professional healthcare institutions. The college, which is affiliated to the Kerala University of Health Sciences, has several nursing programs besides those which are recognized by Indian Nursing Council (INC) into which LCN admits students based on their advice to select candidates suitable for the various nursing courses offered.

The admission cycle of LCN is usually coinciding with the academic calendar of Kerala University of Health Sciences. Admission to the courses in this college is based on merit and gets admission to the most qualified candidates.

Undergraduate courses such as B.Sc Nursing and General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) base their eligibility on the marks scored in Plus Two or equivalent examination. The GNM program particularly considers overall marks from the Part III optional subjects. Postgraduate admissions for M.Sc Nursing specializations take place through the entrance examination conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, Government of Kerala or the Supervisory Committee, Government of Kerala.

Degree wise Admission process

B.Sc Nursing: This flagship undergraduate program in the college admits 90 students annually. Admission is based on the marks scored in Plus Two or equivalent examination with a weightage to science subjects. The course duration is four years.

Post Basic B.Sc Nursing: This two-year course takes in 20 students. The program is aimed at registered nurses who are interested in further qualifications. Therefore, the probable grounds of admission would depend on nursing qualifications along with working years.

M.Sc Nursing: Under M.Sc Nursing, LCN offers five different specializations, admitting 5 students each for:

  1. M.Sc Community Health Nursing
  2. M.Sc Psychiatric Nursing
  3. M.Sc Paediatrics Nursing
  4. M.Sc Medical Surgical Nursing
  5. M.Sc Obstetrics and Gynaecological Nursing

Admission into these programs is through an entrance examination organized by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, Government of Kerala or the Supervisory Committee, Government of Kerala. BSc Nursing graduates are eligible to apply.

GNM: The diploma program in General Nursing and Midwifery trains candidates for practical nursing skills behind which marks secured in Plus Two are considered with emphasis on the Part III optional subjects.
