Mahatma Gandhi School of Economics and Commerce, Silchar, was established in 1994 as a constituent college of Assam University. It is a co-educational institution that focuses on teaching economics and commerce at the postgraduate levels and has 11 faculty members currently offering its range of master's and research programmes.

Mahatma Gandhi School of Economics and Commerce offers numerous facilities that enrich life on campus. A well-equipped library works as an academic resource centre to help the students in research and study work. Students who wish to engage themselves in physical fitness have a gym on campus. The school has separated hostel facilities for boys and girls so that students from different regions are accommodated comfortably. A health centre with first aid facilities has been placed to help in emergency medical care. There is an auditorium for events and seminars, which gives way to the development of a vibrant academic community.
