In WBJEE previous year cut off list, under every category section a rank is given.... Then what type of this rank gmr or category rank??

Roshni 3rd Sep, 2022

Hi,

This is a very common confusion among candidates, so let me clarify it to you. The opening and closing ranks that you see on the previous year WBJEE cutoff list is your General Merit Rank (GMR) and college is alloted on the basis of this very rank.

GMR is your overall rank/position (among all the candidates who have given WBJEE) which is given to you on the basis of your WBJEE score.

Now, category rank is basically where you stand among the other candidates belonging to the same category, as yours. They generally don't ask for your category rank during e-counselling registration process. But there is a use of it later, only and only if your category rank is very good. And a very good category rank is any rank under 1000.

There are a number of seats reserved in each college, for separate categories. This is sometimes a matter of luck, so, if your category rank is good (i.e <1000) they tend to consider it during admission, and check whether your rank is better than the other candidates (of your category) who have applied for the same stream as yours. If your rank is the best out of all, then you get the seat. And if it isn't due to some reason, then like earlier, they will consider your GMR only.

So you will have to rely on your GMR more, to get you into a college.

I hope that was helpful.

I had 6 subjects in 12th CBSE- english, phy, chem, maths, bio and additional as physical education. Now applying for counselling in WBJEE, what should be my maximum marks 500 or 600? If 500, should I leave out physical educations marks?

Mallika Thaledder 15th Mar, 2024

The marks obtained in the additional subject are not usually included in the total marks calculation or overall percentage. Students should only enter the marks of the five main subjects - English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and the total out of 500 during counselling processes. Wherever subject details are required, students can simply mention the main five subjects, leaving out the additional subject completely.

My wbjee rank 26502 and tfw rank 5500.can l get good college through tfw rank?

Sumedha Bhattacharya 31st Aug, 2022

Dear Student ,

As per last year WBJEE cut off details , you can get some of  the following colleges through your GMR rank .

  • Academy of Technology, Adisaptagram, Hooghly-28118 (ECE)
  • Asansol Engineering College, Asansol, Burdwan-37557 (Civil)
  • B.P. Poddar Institute of Management & Technology, Kolkata- 31950 (ECE)
  • Bengal College of Engineering & Technology, Durgapur-32793 (EE) and others

remember .. WBJEE GMR rank are only applicable for admission not category ranks ... category ranks are just for  storing information to candidates .

But , remember .. each year the cut off can change due to the following factors:

  • Seat Capacity
  • Difficulty level of exam
  • No of students appeared for exam etc.

During WBJEE registration, I registered as GENERAL even though i am OBC. Can I go through Decentralized Counselling as OBC candidate?

Sumedha Bhattacharya 1st Sep, 2022

Dear Student ,

First of all , you need to remember WBJEE admission through counselling is totally based on GMR / PMR , not on category ranks .

So, it will be fine if you have filled up the registration form as Gen Candidate as your admission will be based on General rank only .

But , for direct admission .. or decentralized Counselling  .. may be the college authority need OBC certificate if you tell them that you are a OBC candidate . It's better to contact with the specific college authority for detail information about direct admission .

Hope this helps !

Why WBJEEB give category rank in WBJEE rank card?????

Roshni 1st Sep, 2022

Hi,

The basic meaning of the category rank is to see where you stand (on the basis of your WBJEE score) among the other candidates of your category. There are a number of seats in most of the colleges which are reserved for separate categories. During WBJEE e-counselling you will notice that they only ask for your general merit rank (GMR) that is because for the online college alotment procedure they consider your GMR only.

Now if you belong to a category, and your category rank is very good (i.e. <1000) then they might consider your category rank and check whether there is any other applied candidate from your category who has a better category rank than yours. If not, then you get one of the few reserved seats in that college under your quota.

Otherwise, they will go with your GMR only.

I hope that was helpful.

Raghav Kumar 28th Aug, 2022
Hello Student,

Hope you are doing well. Keep one thing in mind that cutoff changes every year. There are various factors Determining the cutoff. Factors Determining for exam Cutoff :
  • Number of applicants.

  • The number of candidates who appeared in the exam.

  • The difficulty level of exam.

  • Total number of seats available.

  • Previous year cutoff trends.

According to previous year data analysis,Computer Science branch has less chances. You have chances of following college.

  • Dr BC Roy Engineering College, Durgapur

  • Narula Institute of Technology, Agarpara

  • Future Institute of Engineering and Management, Kolkata

  • MCKV Institute of Engineering, Howrah

  • Asansol Engineering College, Asansol

hi sir my wbjee gmr rank is 18337 and OBC A rank is 834 can I get a government colleges any stream

Sumedha Bhattacharya 26th Aug, 2022

Dear Student ,

First of all, it's very difficult to predict any exact cut off for any colleges as each year the cut off can change due to several factors like :

  • Seat Matrix
  • Difficulty level of exam
  • No of students appeared etc.

Note : WBJEE admission only based on GMR rank , not on category rank.

Well , as per previous year cut off details , you have less chances to get any Govt college through your rank ,

Still , some of the Govt. colleges names with their domain I have listed below whose cut off is nearby to your cut off :

  • Govt. College of Engineering & Textile Technology, Serampore- Apparel & Production Management- 18225
  • Ghani Khan Choudhury Institute of Engineering & Technology, Malda- Food Technology- 17742
