Hi,
This is a very common confusion among candidates, so let me clarify it to you. The opening and closing ranks that you see on the previous year WBJEE cutoff list is your General Merit Rank (GMR) and college is alloted on the basis of this very rank.
GMR is your overall rank/position (among all the candidates who have given WBJEE) which is given to you on the basis of your WBJEE score.
Now, category rank is basically where you stand among the other candidates belonging to the same category, as yours. They generally don't ask for your category rank during e-counselling registration process. But there is a use of it later, only and only if your category rank is very good. And a very good category rank is any rank under 1000.
There are a number of seats reserved in each college, for separate categories. This is sometimes a matter of luck, so, if your category rank is good (i.e <1000) they tend to consider it during admission, and check whether your rank is better than the other candidates (of your category) who have applied for the same stream as yours. If your rank is the best out of all, then you get the seat. And if it isn't due to some reason, then like earlier, they will consider your GMR only.
So you will have to rely on your GMR more, to get you into a college.
I hope that was helpful.
The marks obtained in the additional subject are not usually included in the total marks calculation or overall percentage. Students should only enter the marks of the five main subjects - English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and the total out of 500 during counselling processes. Wherever subject details are required, students can simply mention the main five subjects, leaving out the additional subject completely.
Dear Student ,
As per last year WBJEE cut off details , you can get some of the following colleges through your GMR rank .
remember .. WBJEE GMR rank are only applicable for admission not category ranks ... category ranks are just for storing information to candidates .
But , remember .. each year the cut off can change due to the following factors:

Hope this helps !
First of all , you need to remember WBJEE admission through counselling is totally based on GMR / PMR , not on category ranks .
So, it will be fine if you have filled up the registration form as Gen Candidate as your admission will be based on General rank only .
But , for direct admission .. or decentralized Counselling .. may be the college authority need OBC certificate if you tell them that you are a OBC candidate . It's better to contact with the specific college authority for detail information about direct admission .
The basic meaning of the category rank is to see where you stand (on the basis of your WBJEE score) among the other candidates of your category. There are a number of seats in most of the colleges which are reserved for separate categories. During WBJEE e-counselling you will notice that they only ask for your general merit rank (GMR) that is because for the online college alotment procedure they consider your GMR only.
Now if you belong to a category, and your category rank is very good (i.e. <1000) then they might consider your category rank and check whether there is any other applied candidate from your category who has a better category rank than yours. If not, then you get one of the few reserved seats in that college under your quota.
Otherwise, they will go with your GMR only.
First of all, it's very difficult to predict any exact cut off for any colleges as each year the cut off can change due to several factors like :
Note : WBJEE admission only based on GMR rank , not on category rank.
Well , as per previous year cut off details , you have less chances to get any Govt college through your rank ,
Still , some of the Govt. colleges names with their domain I have listed below whose cut off is nearby to your cut off :
