how to start the gate preparation for gate exam

akshaevelin27_9770651 Student Expert 15th Aug, 2019

Hello aspirant,

I will give you a month-wise strategy to prepare for any GATE Exam-

For June, July, August, September, October and November -

  1. Make sure that you know that you are going to prepare for GATE and not collect enormous knowledge. This is important because you clearly need to distinguish the necessary from the extras.
  2. Deactivate your Facebook account if you have one. You can live without it.
  3. Get a correspondence course from some coaching. There are two coaching institutes in which offer good correspondence courses for Chemical Engineering - Engineer’s Institute of India (EII) and GATE Coach. I would strongly recommend EII. (Mentioning this because I am a Chemical Engineering student)
  4. Carefully select the books you will be following to start your preparation. I will give a list of the books at the end of this answer.
  5. When the coaching correspondence material arrives, carefully notice the topics that are ACTUALLY in syllabus. Those books contain a plethora of knowledge which you do not need to crack GATE. You need to sort out things that are necessary in syllabus.
  6. Start making your own notes from books by keeping a check on syllabus from coaching correspondence.
  7. At the end of every subject, take the book containing GATE previous year subject wise questions and solve it thoroughly.
  8. At every fifth week after finishing a subject, solve the previous year questions again to keep a check on concepts you wrote.
  9. Buy a test series around the month of October and start taking subject-wise tests. Two tests per subject is sufficient. Taking more tests would be a waste of your time.

THIS SHOULD BE DONE BY THE 30th NOVEMBER.

Now I will tell what to do in month of December and January.

December -

  1. Take all the notes you have prepared and revise them between 1st to 15th December.
  2. From 15th to 24th December, solve all the previous year GATE question papers again. This should be 4th time that you should be solving GATE previous year papers.
  3. From 25th December to 31st December, clear out all your doubts that you have ever accumulated.

January -

  1. Take your first full length Computer based test on 1st January. On this day, you will know your strength and weaknesses. From this test, you will analyze the minute concepts you need to work on for next 30 days.
  2. After the full length test is over, spend 1 hour more to analyze the questions you got incorrect. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP TO SCORE A TOP 100 RANK.
  3. After your first full length test, revise all your subjects again between 1st January to 5th January.
  4. Take your second full length test on 5th January. You should see improvement. And if you do not see improvement, then don't be disheartened. Start revising all subjects again.
  5. Between 8th to 12th January, prepare your formulae notebook. From this point on, you will be revising your formula notebook three times a week and constantly be working on the gaps you have to fill in your preparation.
  6. Take your third full length test on 13th of January. This time, there will be immense improvement. You will feel confident and happy.
  7. On 15th of January take any one full length GATE paper from 2011–2019. Set the timer of 2 hours instead of 3 hours. This will help you build up your speed.
  8. Revise your entire syllabus again between 15th January to 19th January.
  9. On 20th January, take two previous year GATE papers with a timer of 2 hours. Take one paper in the morning shift and second paper in evening shift.
  10. Starting from 20th January, you will be solving only GATE previous year papers and Full Length tests from test series till there is one week left for your exam.

Last week before Exam -

  1. DO NOT take any tests.
  2. Keep on revising your formula notebook everyday. EVERYDAY. ALL. THE. SUBJECTS.
  3. Sleep for 8 to 10 hours per day.
  4. Do not eat anything which you do not eat daily.
  5. Do not learn anything new. Keep on revising what you already know.

On the day of Exam -

  1. Chill out and take the exam. A rank under 100 awaits you for sure.

Good Luck.

I am in class 11. I am prepare for jee so which book i should buy for organic chemistry "solomons and fryhal" or "op tandon" and why?

Sunanda Dhar Student Expert 12th Aug, 2019

See, Organic Chemistry is a vast subject ,so importantly you need to stick with the syllabus. There is a whole sea of text available which ,in fact , is of brilliant standard …So actually figuring out what’s in and what’s out would be difficult (and more importantly time consuming). So you must your instructor’s notes religiously ,focus more on solving a wide variety of problems(Look for M.S. Chauhan’s Advance Problems in Jee,though it has some really super-difficult questions but you might skip on advice of your instructor) and if time allows read utmost one book.,Paula Bruice would be great, its really awesome, covers everything from scratch that too with great lucidity)

also I am attaching a link please check it out

Hope you find it helpful

let me know in the comment box if you are having any further doubts

thanks

Good Luck!

If you are very much interested in O.C. or involved with olympiads, then I would suggest a few more titles:

Morrison & Boyd,(A great read, Covers biomolecules up till exhaustion)

Solomon & Fryhle(its exhaustive, but the adapted portions are difficult to comprehend)

I.L. Finar(This is some kind of holy text on O.C.,too old fashioned, really advanced, might be used as a reference, has ozonolysis mechanism explained)

J. Clayden, N. Greeves, S. Warren and P. Wothers, “Organic Chemistry”:(this one is huge and contains possibly too much but all brilliantly explained

Suggest some good books for CLAT Preparation

mahimadogra_6929406 Student Expert 13th Aug, 2019
Hey.
The Syllabus of CLAT includes a total of 5 sections. Here is the section wise syllabus of CLAT-
1. General Knowledge and Current Affairs- 50 questions for 50
2. Legal Aptitude- 50 questions for 50 marks
3. English- including Comprehension questions 40 for 40 marks
4. Logical Reasoning- 40 questions for 40 marks
5. Elementary Mathematics-20 question for 20 marks.
In case you are looking for an all inclusive guide then the best one is- Universal's guide to CLAT and LLB. Other good guides for the same are- Arihant's guide for CLAT and Pearson's guide to CLAT. You can also go for coaching from institutes like Career Launcher, Bulls eye etc according to your city.
Here are some tips for preparation for each individual section of CLAT along with individual sources for each.

General Knowledge- The GK Section includes both Static GK as well as current affairs. For gstatic general knowledge you can refer to the Concised size Pearson or the Arihants guide.

For current affairs, first of all develop a habit to read newspapers daily. The Hindu is the newspaper preferred by various CLAT Aspirants. It not only builds a strong base for General knowledge but will also help you in your verbal ability section.

There is a site called GK today.in which you can go to for current affairs. They have daily quizes based on current affairs which has been proved very usefull for CLAT preparation.

English- In case you are looking for a separate book For Vocabulary you can refer the book Word Power Made Easy by Normal Lewis. You will come across various words while reading the newspaper too, prepare a list, go through them regularly and try to use them in sentences. You should read the Editorial section of the Hindu for your Reading section as well as Vocabulary section of CLAT. For the reading section practicing your sample questions while timing it would prove usefull.

For grammar you can use the Wren & Martin.

Mathematics- The weightage of the maths section is very less in CLAT. Also the syllabus included elementary level of Mathematics. Hence, if you purchase an all inclusive guide, then practicing for it would suffice.

Logical Reasoning - For Quantitative aptitude in case you are looking for a separate book then quantitative aptitude by RS Aggarwal can be used. Other wise Universal's guide to CLAT or Arihant guide is also sufficient for CLAT. Make sure that you go through the previous year question too.

Legal Aptitude- Universals guide to CLAT and LLB, Pearson CLAT Guide are considered the best for this section. Fo through the basics of handling the questions of this section at first, and then utilise it to practice from these guides or any other source online, previous year papers etc.

Make sure that you go through the past year question papers and practice them along with sample papers. This will help you to have an idea about how to attempt the paper, the level of questions for each section, and how to manage your time well.

If you are planning to take any coaching in institutes like Career launcher, Bulls eye etc then their reading material covers all aspects. You can refer the books listed above in case you need separate books for any or the sections.

Best of luck!
