VIT organizes its own entrance exam, called the Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE). It is conducted every year in the month of April and May and the admission in all campuses are done on the basis of merit only and to get seat in main campus and in decent branches more than 100 marks would be required. There are limited colleges which give direct admission on the basis of class 12th.

It totally depends on college to college. Mainly good colleges take admission on the basis of entrance exam.

You should give JEE and other engineering entrance exam like BITSAT, VIT, SRM, Manipal and Amrita to take admission in top colleges.

CMAT & MAT are the National level exams. CMAT is conducted by AICTE (All India Council for Technical Management) once in a year and MAT is conducted by AIMA ( All India Management association) four times in a year in the month of February, May, September and December.
