is bioinformatics is a better career for physics graduate?

Abhishek Roy 5th May, 2021

The scope of Bioinformatics in both Industry or Research in Indka is comparatively low, though nowadays you see many of the IITs working on Bioinformatics and similar domains. You may even plan a Masters or PhD abroad in Bioinformatics for better career scope and placement prospects.

After a Bachelors Degree in Physics, incase you are interested in Bioinformatics, Biophysics and similar interdisciplinary fields, first try getting a couple of Research Internships/Projects with some Professors from Top IITs or your Home Institutes. The Summer Reseach Fellowship Program is another good means and you may opt for an Internship at Institutions like IISc Bangalore, IISERs or CSIR Labs.

Following which try developing your profile with Projects, Skills, Accolades and Research Interests, followed by applying for various Universities abroad, once you are done with Respective Examinations like GRE, IELTS, Etc. You may appear for GATE in Physics/Biotechnology (Do Check Requirements for Respective IITs, IISc Bangalore) followed by a M.Tech/MS from some of the Elite Research Institutions of India.

Which college is better interms ofPlacement opportunities (inIncreasingOrder): MANIT for bioinformatics or biotechnology or computational and system biology, NIT Agartala for biotechand biochem. eng., NIT Rourkela for biotechnology, IIESt shibpur for biomed.eng. or IIIT allahbad for bioinformatic?

ayanmukherjee045 9th Jun, 2021

Dear aspirant,

As per my view if I had to consider placements only then of course mnit bhopal and IIIT allahabad would be at a better place if I had to compare between nit Agartala and iiest shibpur.

Nit Agartala is considered to be a decent college not very good or not bad whereas iiest shibpur placements are not very great in case of biotechnology. The placements are very dull. Almost 30-40% are placed from this branch which is very less.

So, IIIT allahabad average package stands somewhere between 18L for cse and for other branches 8-9L atleast. Same in the case for manit bhopal but average package is a bit lower.
