Is FPM from IIM Raipur good? What is the career in it?

Neha Sharma 15th Feb, 2019

Hi

IIM Raipur has been set up the Government of India in 2010, and the FPM (Fellow Program in Management) program has been started 8 years back, that is from academic year 2012-13. The main aim of the program is to prepare scholars for the teaching and advance research.

FPM from Raipur is a good choice and you can consider the following highlights will help you making your decision:

  • IIM Raipur is a very new school and their infrastructure for research is still “developing”.
  • It has good connectivity to the campus.
  • Unlike other institutes, IIM allows you to formally begun your research in 2nd year itself.

As far as Careers are concerned, following points will give you the insight:

  • FPM program has as such no companies directly coming for the placement for FPM batch.
  • Majority of the students are placed as an assistant professor job in various institutions
  • Most of the students apply for the Post doctorate and it is also a good option. However, if you are interested in campus placements, you can apply to the industries directly.
  • Post your studies, Consultant profile is one of the most demanded roles post FPM and the Research department is the second best option.

You can even go through the following colleges for your FPM and explore more choices before going for IIM-Raipur:

Management Development Institute(MDI) Gurgaon:

The faculty is plus point here, they are quite experienced and will be add on to your research program.

I have written CAT and expecting more than 90 Percentile. Please tell top management clgs which are accepting CAT score for PHD/FPM.

Azim Shaikh 2nd Dec, 2018
There is no minimum CAT percentile or other qualifying exam score for shortlisting and admissions into the FPM programs (now PhD after passage of the IIM Bill). You have to understand that the purpose of the qualifying mark is to ensure an objective deduction of your basic skills . This is primarily used to measure your fit in the IIM system , primarily your ability to cope with the consistent level of academics , match with other candidates in one to ne discussions, and specifically the ability to understand and apply tough and rigorous statistical and methodological concepts in the pursuance of your PhD in your dissertation and attendant research/publications.

That usually means that each interviewing panel is free to ascertain these abilities from each candidate and the overall CAT score or other requirements are a function of the combined presentation of other candidates. However, given the general increasing level of competition, it may not be safe to go into any CAT related exam / interview or evaluation with an under 90 Percentile score. If you do, you should have a capable defense of your considerations, why you think a lower score is enough for you to pursue a Phd and the general level of capabilities of your peers must also be sufficiently whittled (rofl) so that your scores may shine in comparison.

IIMB has for example pursued a RAT to move away from a CAT specific evaluation of all incoming candidates but includes critical subject matter from Economics and Game theory as well as calculus to ascertain basic skills for FPM. Most Operations and DS areas conduct tests at different campuses or the RAT prior to FPM interviews because of their perceived unique requirements from candidates in terms of technical skills. IIMC also favors an additional round of qualitative or quantitative RAT to ensure no dependence on candidates CAT scores than the reading of basic aptitude and ability to cope with coursework

Thanks,
Azim

Someone please tell me How is the FPM program in IIM,also is it worth doing rather than PGDM?

Roopanki Sharma 8th Jan, 2019

FPM at IIM is rather focused on research. It's a PhD programme. If you are interested into making carer in academics and research and teaching then this programme is good for you. If you are interested only into corporate sector/ starting your own business then I suggest go for PGDM programme.

Can I do FPM course from IIMs. I m B.com graduate student.

Azim Shaikh 23rd Sep, 2018
That's a wrong question ! Not everything should be looked at from  scope point of view ,at least in today's India ,when there are choices available in different careers . I do hope ,the person asking this question belongs to that particular group of having the freedom to choose . Coming back to FPM , it's a PhD in Management subjects from IIM s and one should explore it only if they are interested in academics as a career option and huge hunger for research and analysing new topics . It's a very very intense course and unless and until one loves what he/she is aiming for , it's not at all easy to complete . The standards at IIMs are quite high and they give all facilities and support to the students to do FPM . Therefore huge amount of long term commitment is required in here. The knowledge level that you attain during an FPM is so great and enjoyable that it will put the candidate in a very different intellectual zone. The learning in itself is the reward for doing an FPM . Of course , once it's completed , one can opt for teaching roles in IIMs or other top tier MBA colleges or in Corporate . The salary levels are good in all the cases. As I said earlier , go for it only if you live academics.

Thanks,
Azim
