can a 45 year old person start his career in graphics n print design

pri111nah 16th Nov, 2021

Hi,

No, you are not too old to learn graphic design as a career move so long as your mind is still agile and you are willing to work hard. You could also decide to become a physicist, or a surgeon, or a plumber. But that is just one side of the equation. It is not entirely a question of can one acquire the skills and knowledge, the poster is asking can he get a job as a graphic designer. Again, the answer is yes, but with some caveats.

First off, you are entering a field that is already overloaded with talent, and I use that word loosely as the “talent” is a relative term. A house painter can be talented, but that doesn’t mean s/he can recreate the Sistine Chapel ceiling. In entering this field, you will be directly competing with these people for a finite number of jobs, people who have varying levels of skill and experience. If you are under the impression that you will complete your training and get a job right out of the gate earning $70K in a big name agency or studio…you are sadly mistaken.

The second thing to consider is your age. Like it or not, age discrimination is commonplace in the job market and especially in the design field. This is for any number of reasons, but general consensus, admitted or not, is that young people have better ideas, can be paid less and are in the marketplace longer, so they make a better investment at a lower cost efficient.

Hope this information helps you.

All the best.

can you get a job easily after doing a certificate in graphics and print design in todays times

pri111nah 14th Nov, 2021

Hi,

Yes, Gaining a certificate in graphic design can be really beneficial to your career as it is the only way to show that you are a fully fledged designer—and provides official documentation that you have the skills to start your career in the design world, usually as a junior designer in a design studio or agency.

Graphic design is so profoundly versatile, that your imagination and your passion for the work can take it almost anywhere. You can take your graphic design foundation and apply it to any creative project, on any platform, using any media or technology.

To become a graphic designer, you don’t necessarily need an undergraduate education. Often, the quality of work in your portfolio and the caliber of the clients you’ve worked with will speak louder than the degrees in graphic design you’ve received. However, many people do choose to obtain bachelor’s degrees in graphic design, or in related fields such as industrial design, animation, or fine arts. In fact, some graphic design jobs require a bachelor’s degree in order to apply. There are also associates degree programs focusing on graphic design, which are a more cost-effective alternative to betting a bachelor’s.

Hope this information helps.

All the best.

how much prior knowledge of computers required for certificate in graphics and print design

Yaseera Bhombal 13th Nov, 2021

Hi Naresh,

I hope everything is going well for you. Before you can understand computers, you must first understand design, therefore begin by researching design principles and design elements. You'll always need to comprehend these no matter what medium you utilise (photography, hand cut lettering, collage, or computer-aided pictures). The first requirement is an excellent sense of design, followed by a good sense of colour. The next phase in the learning process is to exercise your imagination skills and try to recreate them digitally. So your next requirement is software skills, i.e. understanding design tools and how to use them effectively.

A solid understanding of Photoshop and Illustrator is required. I would recommend to be an excellent graphic designer while keeping common sense in mind. Also, be certain that you design for the benefit of society as a whole. The final point is simply my advice.
