According to recent data, the GATE Metallurgical Engineering (MT) cutoff for PSUs and IITs in the SC category is around 27.3 marks which is considered the qualifying mark for the SC/ST/PWD category; this means that a candidate from the SC category needs to score at least 27.3 marks to be considered for admission to IITs or PSU recruitment through GATE MT.

It is really difficult to get into a government college at this rank through JoSAA counselling rounds. However, you should try your luck in CSAB counselling. In CSAB rounds you can get colleges at higher ranks and if you're lucky, you might get a branch of your preference. In my opinion you should take Metallurgy in NIT Surathkal. Let me explain why.
1. The NIT tag will be useful for you in whichever company you get placed in future. The initial impression of being an NITian will open doors for you.
2. You can learn programming by yourself and choose software based Internships in NIT . That way you might have to work hard as you'll have to maintain your GPA as well.
You will get more opportunities than you will ever get in third tier college. You will get a chance to apply for excellent internship and placement.
3. The faculties and alumni network of NITs are amazing and hence you will get an opportunity to learn more. Faculties in NITs will be willing to help you even if you don't belong to their branch.
Hence, a lots of door will open for you if you choose NIT if you are willing to work in a systematic, strategic and planned manner .

NIT Trichy has the High rank among all the NITs. Hence, I would recommend that you choose it.
Yes, non-CSE people do get placed in IT companies.
1. If you are not interested in Chemical or Metallurgy then it is better to choose to NIT Trichy. You will have excellent exposure to great faculties, good access to internship and placements.
2. For getting into Software companies you will have to learn programming, and work hard to maintain your CGPA as well. You can do internships that align with your interests in software. That way you can improve your experience in this field and get a really good chance of getting placed in a good software companies with great package.
