what is my chance of getting into a direct PhD programme with 7.42 CGPA ?
As many IITs are calling for PhD after B.Tech and students who appeared for GATE and could not make it to M.Tech in IITs usually called for PhD exam and interview.
There is no such fixed CGPA . Students are shortlisted for PhD interview (For departments who do not take written tests for shortlisting) on the following basis:
Either GATE score or CGPA in M. Tech & B. Tech for candidates who have Masters degree and are applying for regular PhD. Though passing GATE is compulsory if candidate is shortlisted by CGPA (In this case GATE score needn't be current. GATE on which candidate has taken admission in MTech or any other GATE score is also valid)
Cureent GATE score for candidates applying for direct PhD. Generally those who have only BTech degree apply for direct PhD but candidates who also have Masters degree can apply.
Now coming to CGPA.
As I said earlier there is no fixed CGPA for a particular department and it varies each year depending on the following factors:
Number of PhD vacancies.
Number of candidates who have applied.
GATE score & CGPA of candidates who have applied.
Number of candidates department is planning to shortlist for interview. (Ratio will definitely be greater than 1:40)
It depends on the department also (You have not specified department). In few streams it is easier to score as compared to others.
For the branch like Mechanical minimum CGPA is around 8.75 (not exactly) and it is higher for CS, EC and civil.

I am an M.Tech (integrated) student in biotechnology. If i write gate will I get chance to move forward with a PhD programme or will i be getting into an M.tech course in any IIT?
hello,
yes, you are eligible to apply for phd. See the M.Tech course is of 2 years and the validity of gate score is 3 years. You can apply with your same gate score for a phd program or if you want to increase your gate score then you can start fresh means you can give gate exam again and apply for phd program.
all the best!

Doing a Ph.D benefits ?
HI,
See there is phd courses for various streams , let it be arts, commerce, science, engineering, management studies any of the field there is phd course options. general eligibility criteria set for any phd course is candidates must have a master degree or post graduate course in related discipline from a recognized education board. also must satisfy the qualifying marks criteria. right now in india in engineering discipline and many other courses like arts, commerce, mathematics related disciplines pd course holders get monthly stipends on 25k-50k depends on the course duration and the norms of the university. also there is many companies like facebook research provide scholarship for phd students.
now see generally phd course is of 3-4 years duration, also the person need to submit the research papers as per the course recruitment which is quite a tedious work. so a person should have immense interest for the course before choosing it as a phd thesis.
after doing phd there is several work options like lecturer in college, principle scientist, consultants in relevant discipline etc.
hope it would help.
