srikar kanakala 28th Mar, 2020

Dear Harpreet,

In order to become a Surgeon, here are a few steps you must follow.

  • Completion of undergraduate and graduate education (a baccalaureate degree and a medical degree)
  • Completion of a 5-year residency program in general surgery. This includes specialized knowledge of the abdomen; alimentary tract (digestive organs) breast, skin, and soft tissue, comprehensive trauma management, critical care, endocrine system, head and neck, surgical oncology (management of screening, surveillance, surgical therapy, rehabilitation, vascular (circulatory) system.
  • Residency program requirements for each of the surgical specialty areas for example, thoracic surgery requires 5 years of general surgery training plus 2 years of training in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery.

If you particularly looking to study in Canada, make sure you have applied for passport and have all the necessary documents. The average tuition fees in Canada to get into a medical school will cost you about 16 lakh rupees every year and can reach up to 65 lakh rupees.

Some of the best medical schools in Canada are,

  • University of Toronto- $73,000 every year which is almost 55 lakh Indian rupees
  • MccGill University- $40,000 per year which is almost 30 lakh Indian rupees
  • University of British Columbia- $20,000  per year which is almost 15 lakh Indian rupees
  • McMaster University- $96,000  per year which is almost 72 lakh Indian rupees

Hii Raja!
Please mention the subject stream you will be completing your graduation with. Because, you need MBBS as initial course for becoming a neurosurgeon and then, 2-3 years of MS. After becoming a doctor, it depends on you how much neurosurgery centres and hospitals you can build and help people with.
Hope you understand.
Good luck!

I dont have vision in one eye(monocular vision)and I have accurate vision in other (6/6). I want to become cardiothoracic surgeon. I could get admission in MBBS and PG college or not. I have no other problem.could I become surgeon or i will be disqualified in medical fitness test due to one eye.

priyaankasarkar Student Expert 28th Apr, 2020

Sunny,  for being eligible for PWD reservation for NEET, your visual impairment should not exceed 40%. According to NTA Guidelines, Low vision and Blindness are listed as the conditions eligible for PWD reservation. It does not mention anything about Monocular vision. You can check that at: https://ntaneet.nic.in/ntaneet/ShowPdf.aspx?

There are 2 things to this. If you are enquiring about reservation, then here is the thing. If the range of your eye sight falls at or below 40%, then you are eligible for PWD reservation. Now there is no vertical reservation. It is a horizontal reservation within your Category. For example, if you belong to OBC Category and you have PWD reservation, then you will be eligible for OBC-PWD quota. If the visual impairment is more than 40% then, you will only be eligible for OBC reservation.

If you are only looking for eligibility, you can appear for NEET and should you secure a seat in Medical College you can take the seat and study to become a Doctor. But it might be a problem for PG because if you take up few specialisations, then Binocular vision becomes mandatory for treatment. For a clear idea about this, you should consult a District Medical College for an evaluation and a certificate for this.

Also we would suggest you to mail NTA at their helpdesk: [email protected]

Vinit, in your 12th, you should have had Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English as your core subjects. You should  complete your 12th with a minimum aggregate of 50% in your Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects. It is 50% for General Category, 45% for PWD and 40% for OBC,SC,ST. By doing so, you become eligible for NEET which is the entrance examination for admission to MBBS, BDS, Ayush and Veterinary courses. Now MBBS is a 50 month course. After the succesful completion of course along with 1 year mandatory internship, you need to appear for NEXT and secure a seat in any of the MS Specialisations. Upon competion of the course you become a surgeon. For example, you take up General Surgery, you become a General Surgeon and if you pick up MS in Orthopaedics, you become an Orthopaedic Surgeon.

What should be the qualifications of a Neurosurgeon in India to earn lakhs or crores per month?

priyaankasarkar Student Expert 9th Apr, 2020
Raja, the qualification remains the same. Complete MBBS first and then take up MS in Neuro. But what helps you earn more money is your skill and success rate. And also do remember thay every doctor starts with thousands as his/her salary. Thats the minimum a Doctor gets paid. And as he/she puts up experience and starts working in multiple hospitals as a Consultant surgeon, does his income increase. Crores is mere impossible just by being a doctor. It takes years of practise and sticking to reality that patience is the key.

What is the Working hours of Neurosurgeons a day in India?

Richa Gautam 9th Apr, 2020

The working environment for neurosurgeons is quite pleasant with most of the patient interaction and surgeries happening inside well-equipped hospitals. However, work hours can be long and at times, neurosurgeons end up spending 50-60 hours (or even more, depending on the practice) in a week. Certain surgeries might take 3-4 hours, whereas the more complicated ones might even exceed 10 hours. Neurosurgeons might also be required to attend to emergencies during off-hours and weekends. However, the perks and the satisfaction offered, in the end, are unparalleled.
