Hello ,

Life cycles of plants

Haplontic Life cycle : Sporophytic generation is represented only by one celled zygote. No free living sporophytic generation is seen. Haploid spore formation occurs from meiosis is zygote. Now three spores may degenerate or all four remain functional or they may further divide into meiospores. Haploid spores divide mitotically to give gametophyte. The dominant photosynthetic phase in such plants is the free living gametophyte. Examples are algae such as volvox, spirogyra.

Diplontic Life cycle : Diploid Sporophyte is the dominant, photosynthetic and independent phase. The gametophytic phase is represented by a single or few celled haploid gametes. This is observed in gymnosperms and angiosperms.
