Explain please why the 1st period of the modern periodic table has only 2 element??

The first electron shell of an atom that is the K shell, it has the capacity of 2 electrons only. Hydrogen and helium have 1 and 2 electrons each respectively so they only can fit in the first periodic table. The 2nd table has 8 electrons capacity.
