Hi Candidate,

A straight line is a focus of the equation y equals mx+c, where "m" refers to the slope of the line in a quadrant and "c" refers to the slope interpreted on y axis which may be positive or negative depending on the quadrant.

In the structural diagram of chemical compounds, the straight line depicts the carbon chain present in the structure of that compound.
