Ranks are probably given on the marks you score in the exam. It's basically more like the percentile thing, the one who score maximum is given the oercrbtile 100 or is ranked as 1 and the next best marks are ranked accordingly. However if the student scoressame marks then it may happen taht same rank is given to the two candidates. 

And the ranks are mostly given on combined basis .
