You can write JEE Mains exam only for 3 consequtive years after passing your class 12th including the year of passing. That means if you have passed your class 12th in 2021, then you are eligible to write JEE Mains only in the year 2021, 2022 and 2023.
Also you are eligible to write JEE Advanced in 2021 and 2022.
So if you are well determined to get into IITs or NITs by cracking JEE Mains/ Advanced, only then you take drop to prepare for it. JEE Mains is not the only entrance exam to get admission to Engineering colleges. You can write other entrance exams as well in order to get an engineering seat in reputed Institutes. If you have applied for any of these exams then you can try scoring well in them.
But if you are focusd at IITs and NITs then you can take an year's drop and prepare well for it.
Now it all depends upon your determination and interest. So take your decision wisely.

You can take drop years as long as you are eligible to give the exam. To know about eligibility criteria in detail you should check out the link I will provide in the end of the answer. Also, I personally suggest you to don't take more than 1 drop year. Prepare well and you can definitely crack this exam. You just have to stay consistent and motivated all the time.
