Dear Aspirant,

At the rank of 3295, the chances of getting a good IIT or NIT are not very bright, although at many places you may find as per GATE cutoff 2016, you can get IIT Patna and even some of the top IITs, but it would be wrong to get your hopes high this year.

You can find the link for previous year gate cutoffs for different branches at different institutions here:

https://engineering.careers360.com/articles/gate-cutoff-for-ece

You can still get into some of new IIITs like IIIT Guwahati, Lucknow, Bhubneshwar, Bhopal etc at this score.

Although, one of my friend got a chance to an interdisciplinary cource on PhD in environmental engineering at 3500 rank last year in IISc Banglore.

I would suggest, you must apply to some of the good institutes like IIT Bombay, IISc Bangalore for the PhD courses, because most of the low hanging fruits are in interdisciplinary fields like nano electronics, bio medical engineering, nanotechnology, etc.

Many times students are not very well aware of all this intersdisciplinary courses, so the number of applications are very less. Due to this, many times students get call even at low ranks. For admissions to these courses, if you get a call, you will go though a short screeing test followed by an one to one interview. If you are offered a seat, you can get admission into that.

Please visit the websites of individual IITs and look for what all PhD/M.Tech programs you can still apply to.

Now, incase you are not able to get admission into any of the good IITs/IISc/NITs at this rank, there is one more thing you can do.

In most of the IITs, admissions for Masters programs happens twice a year, once this after GATE exam, of which most of the students are aware of and secondly in month of Sep/Oct/Nov, for M.S. research programs, for which the sessions begins in January. The cutoff marks are very low for these admissions, and many a times, people who have just qualified GATE get admission into top IITs.

For this, you have to be active on IITs websites, as you have to individually apply to the IIT and course of your choice. Notifications comes in the month of Sep/Oct/Nov. Admissioin process is a bit different here. Your GATE qualification is necessary here (ranks does not matter much), you will have to produce an SOP (Statement of Purpose) during the application, which explains the selection panel why you want to join perticular course. You will have to face an interview, and after that you are assigned seat.

Hope this helps.

Let me know if anyhing else is required.
