Hello applicant,
GATE exam doesn't only depends how good your mathematics is.
Main thing is if you can reach upto the cutoff released.
Branch is on your interest and passion,if you can do best in your interest everything is conquered.
Every branch has it's own significance.And each oh the branch cutoff decreases and increases year by year.
So my suggestion is to follow what you are good in .

Being easy of any Gate paper is not the measure of its toughness of the question, rather it depend more on, how many smart student took the test to raise the cutoff [threshold]. And at the end, it is normalized.

People say [as a word of mouth] Mechanical or Electrical or EC is tough and Instrumentation [CH or BT] is easy comparatively. I disagree.

In case of Mechanical or [EE or EC], the number of students are very high. So the cutoff marks is also low, comparatively. In last 5 year their cutoff is between 25–30. They are increasing decreasing alternatively.

But in Instrumentation [CH or BT], the threshold are very high. There is monotonic increase in cutoff of Instrumentation. 25 in 2013; 25 in 2014; 25.45 in 2015; 31.60 in 2016; 34.60 in 2017. For BT, it was 38.90, and 44.30 for CH. It was highest this year.

Student securing 100 rank in Instrumentation, is equivalent to 600 rank in Electrical, if you compare their normalized Gate score.

GATE is very unpredictable. No branch has substantial record of being easy.
