Hello,
JEE stands for Joint Entrance Examination. JEE has two stages one is Mains and other is Advanced. Those who have score greater than the cut-off released for Mains are qualified to attend Advanced. Advanced is necessary only for admission to IITs. In Mains there are two papers. Paper 1 is for general engineering and paper 2 for architecture.
With JEE Mains score you can register for admission to all institutes including NITs and IIITs but except IITs. Now JEE is conducted twice a year- January and April session. If you are in Class 12 or already passed with gap not more than two years, you can apply for both January 2020 and April 2020. January session registration will start by July/August 2019 and April session registration by January/February 2020. You can read about this year's examination brochure and related details by visiting https://jeemain.nic.in/webinfo/Public/Home.aspx. NTA is the authority that conducts JEE. They are responsible for registration, conducting examination, releasing answer key, publishing cut-off and rank list.
For admission in IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs you have to register for JoSAA counselling by June 2020. For other institutes that consider JEE score you can apply directly through website of the institute or as notified by the institute.
