It is fine to try cut costs in submitting application forms, but please! I do not encourage you to fill in the wrong category in your MSc entrance exam form , even if you will not take admission this year.

Universities have a very rigid system in place when it comes to information shared in application form by the students and the exam bodies. In case if it comes to notice at any stage (whether at the time of scrutiny of application and / or at the time of Entrance Exam, Admit Card, result, counselling and or even at a later stage) that the candidate had provided wrong category while submitting the application form to avail the cheaper fee, the candidature will be cancelled and the candidate will not be considered for admission , irrespective of the fact that he/she would have appeared in the written examination or that he/she is qualifying the same. This is the case even if you receive a very good grade on the exam.

Falsely reporting information on an official application may seem like a small thing -- but it can carry severe implications. It is what is known as a misrepresentation or a fraud. Litigation might not be the immediate answer for an applicant, but it might result in your being banned from ever applying to that particular university or perhaps all universities in a consortium.

You are not planning on taking admission this year and it no longer is important that form is “cheap” if your form is not even valid. Result of having a false category while appearing for an exam won’t be of any use. If you decide to reapply next year, you will need to complete a new form with the right information, pay the correct fee and follow the process all over again.

The University and its authorities will create an admission system that is just and delivers without favour or prejudice. Availing of benefits (such as lower fees) that have been reserved for certain categories (such as reserved categories or economically weaker sections) if they are not yours is like gaming the system, and is unfair to the real candidates from those categories.

That’s a long-term site-ban way of doing things, so let’s not do this first and try the following for any future rounds instead:

Financial Aid/Waivers: In case money is tight, see if the institutions have any sort of specific fee waivers/concessions for students whose family income is below a certain level, and that you in reality will be eligible for- in case you meet their criteria.

Targeted Applications: Apply only to the one or two exams that make the most sense for your future goals so that you limit costs if you’re just taking it for practice.

Finally, honesty and accuracy in all official forms, particularly account forms, are of key importance. And it makes it as painless as possible in your situation, while also safeguarding your academic future.
