All you should be having is basic knowledge of biology... which you should be having if you're a math bio student in class 12... and you should be interested in biology... if you have doubts halfway through your course or career, that you don't like the subject now like you used to before... then you should think about it few more times...
My advice for you would be, have an inspiration in biology... it really helps

One can also pursue three-year degree course in Genetics / Biological Science / Life Science / Biotechnology subjects and then go for post graduation (MSc) in genetics.
One who desires for further study and research can pursue M.Tech and PhD in genetic engineering offered by few institutes in India including the IITs.
