see MSC students appear in gate exam to get chances to do PhD in reputed IITS or NITS. however PSUs hires engineering graduates based on gate score for different engineering position. sometimes ongc hires geology candidates for geologist position. as for maths point of view there is less chances in PSUs job through gate. but surely you may find position as research fellow after applying certain colleges or universities and your gate score will be an added advantage for your career.

Yes. there is a chance for you to get a job if you score really well in GATE. IITs may recruit you for programs like Industrial Mathematics and Scientific Computing ,Computer Science and data processing. You might get into research programs like applied maths or  PhD programs. There are teaching positions and PSUs that might consider GATE score.
