- JEE Mains is a pan-India entrance examination, conducted for admission into top NITs (National Institutes of Technology), IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology) and a few other state-funded universities.
- The JEE Mains is also considered as a qualifying examination for the JEE Advanced, which is considered one of the toughest examinations in the world.
- It provides admits into the prestigious IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) and ISM (Indian School of Mines), Danbad. Admits to BE (Bachelor of Engineering), BTech (Bachelor of Technology) and B.Arch (Bachelor of Architecture) degrees are provided by the exam.
Eligibility:
- All students who have passed 12th standard and having an age less than 25 are eligible to appear for JEE Mains.
- It can be attempted a maximum of 3 times, and the student must have taken up Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, along with either one of Chemistry or Biotechnology, to be considered eligible.
Details about the exam:
- The exam has a maximum score of 360, and approximately 1.2 million students appear for it every year across India, to get admitted into the famed NITs.
- Out of this, around 2 lakh students - half seats being reserved - are considered qualified for JEE Advanced.
- Until 2017, 12th standard board exam marks were also considered for JEE Mains rankist - at least 75% marks, or in the top 20 percentile in the qualifying examination. Thus, even if your rank scored for Mains were a bit below par, if you’ve performed considerably well in your Boards, you would be able to obtain a seat in the above-mentioned colleges.
- However, this has been removed this year as Board exam marks are not going to be considered for preparing JEE Mains ranklists.
Syllabus and type of questions:
- The exam is tougher compared to the boards, with much more conceptual questions and questions of varying difficulty.
- Subjects being tested include Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
- The syllabus to be followed is more or less the same as the Board exam, but more care needed to be applied in answering properly.
- The questions are of Multiple Choice type, with 4 marks for each correct answer and a penalty of 1 mark for each wrongly marked choice.
- There is an option for choosing between offline and online exam for BE and BTech students. However only offline mode exists for BArch students.
