Common Admission test (CAT) is important prerequisite for admission into more than 100 management institutes across India .The of the most,if not the most important Examination for getting into quality & most prestigious B-schools of the nation. CAT is organized by IIM generally the older ones till now(There are 19 functional IIMs among which 6 are commonly categorized into the newer ones.)

Management Aptitude Test (MAT) is a standardized test being administered to facilitate Business Schools (B-Schools) to screen candidates for admission to MBA and allied programmes. Around 630 B-schools consider the MAT scores.MAT is commissioned four times in a year(feb, may, sep, dec) where as CAT is an annual Exam.

The mode of CAT exam & two of the MAT exam are online, the rest two are ofline or paper based. There is no paper based option available in case of CAT.

When it comes to difficulty level of the exam the CAT is much higher in the difficulty scale, though primarily the syllabus remains same for both the exams, with an additional section of General knowledge in MAT.

The top Institutes those are accepting CAT scores are subsidized. However the Range of fees varies a lot within these subsidized institutions Such as FMS charges you around 25k for the entire course where as IIM ahmedabad is around 17 lakhs. The fees varies a lot from one IIMS to another (also Same scenario is in IITs & NITs for the management degree accepting only CAT score).Coming to MAT as these are private institutes the fees depends entirely of them with a fair bit of variation too.

The number of Candidate Registered for CAT 2015 is 2.1 lakhs & around 35 thousand in the last MAT(Dec 2015).

In a nutshell the fight for CAT seats is much more brutal & difficult but the reputation & ROI is note worthy. This doesn't mean MAT is not a cake walk or not prestigious. There are quite a few good institutes that falls into the basket of MAT's screening screen

Thanks,
Azim

Hello,

CAT and MAT are two different things and its totally an individuals choice to whether go for cat or mat.
Of Course CAT is way more difficult than MAT in terms of questions markings and it also gives top b-schools in India.
Whereas of you persue MAT then you have choice of B-Schools of more than 140 institutes across India . Therefore it is beneficial for a candidate to opt for MAT.
The difficulty level of MAT exam is quiet low as compared to CAT and that a big thing.
More attempts per year is also there as MAT is being held four times a year.Candidates can choose to give it more than once in a year.

I hope this helps.
