Question : Marks scored by a student in different subjects are given in the table below
Subjects | Marks obtained out of 100 |
English | 55 |
Hindi | 90 |
Mathematics | 75 |
Science | 80 |
Foreign Language | 90 |
Five marks are to be deducted from each subject due to a shortage of attendance. The net average of the mean, median and mode of the marks obtained is_______.
Option 1: 79.33
Option 2: 77.67
Option 3: 82.66
Option 4: 73
Correct Answer: 77.67
Solution :
According to the question,
5 marks are deducted from each subject.
⇒ New marks will be:
Subjects | Marks obtained out of 100 |
English | 55 - 5 = 50 |
Hindi | 90 - 5 = 85 |
Mathematics | 75 - 5 = 70 |
Science | 80 - 5 = 75 |
Foreign Language | 90 - 5 = 85 |
⇒ Mean = $\frac{50+85+70+75+85}{5}$ = $\frac{365}{5}$ = $73$
Arranging the data in ascending order:
50, 70, 75, 85, 85
⇒ Median = middle term = 75
Now, Mode = Most occurred value = 85
So, the net average of Mean, Median, and Mode = $\frac{73+75+85}{3}$ = $\frac{233}{3}$ = 77.67
Hence, the correct answer is 77.67.
