As a direct result of the increase in seats his year as well as starting of new branches at several IITs, including two, Engineering Mechanics and Materials Engineering at IIT Delhi, you might find the cutoffs to lower to a certain extent at the IITs.
I would suggest you targeting the few branches at the following IITs
Mining/Mining Machinery/Environmental/Mineral
Applied Geology/Geophysics at IIT ISM
Metallurgical/Materials Engineering
IIT Ropar Mandi Jodhpur Patna Bhubaneshwar
My suggestion would be, choosing IIT ISM over newer IITs. IIT ISM is excellent in Faculty, Outlook and Placements when it comes to Geological, Mining and Environmental Engineering. Companies like Tata Steel, Vedanta, Coal India, Schlumberger and ExxonMobil are regular recruiters at IIT ISM and more than 85% students are placed from the Mining Department every year, with most of the pacakages lying between 8-12 LPA. Secondly being and old technical institute you even have good prospects when it comes to Non Core and Finance Sector.
