It is advisable that you start as early as possible because the early you will start your GATE Preparation the more time you will have. I think starting from the 3 year of your B.Tech will give you ample time to prepare for GATE .

Focus on the following points to ensure your success

• Understand the GATE syllabus and exam pattern properly. Knowledge of GATE exam pattern will help you to know about the mode of exam, number of sections, type of questions, marking scheme, etc. Knowledge of syllabus will help you to know the right topics for the exam.
• Prepare a time table to study regularly for the exam.
• Ensure that the entire syllabus of the exam is covered before time.
• Give proper time for revision.
• Practice more and more GATE mock tests . It will help you to understand the difficulty level of the exam and you will also be able to analyse your performance.

This is very good to know that you are so serious about your Gate preparation but as per my view it is better to start your preparation in your 3rd year because first 2 years of B.Tech is the ideal time to make all your basics concept clear and strong. Apart from this, below I am providing Gate preparation tips which you should keep in your mind whenever you start your preparation  -

1. Know the syllabus very well.
2. Read standard books only as there are many books available in the market so it is advisable to use the books which make all your concepts clear and which are easy to understand.
3. Understand the weightage of topics properly.
4. Proper Revision plan should be followed.
5. Mock Tests and Practice Tests should be done as this will help you to learn time management skills and this will also make you familiar with the exam pattern.

Yes, you can start your preparation for GATE from the 1st year of graduation. 

In order to start your preparation make sure to look the syllabus of your branch. Try to clear your basics and make your fundamentals strong. You can also refer to previous year papers to undrstand the exam pattern and level of questions. 

 

You can refer below points for your preparation

• Check the past year papers and exam analysis.

• Divide the Topics broadly into Strong, Weak and to be read properly.

• Next schedule your preparation such that you revise the easy ones along with the tough ones and the “never read before” ones. This will ensure you have a clear view of what is to be studied and how you are going to do it.

• While many advise to check the weightage and study accordingly, it is really not the correct way to go. Check the weightage by all means and understand the important topics but don’t neglect to study the not so important topics

• Make Short Notes while you study as this is will be helpful during revision.

• Write down Formulae that you find difficult to remember so that they are handy for revision.

• Keep the solved problems separately indexed so that you can refresh and revise later when required.

• Analyse your preparation at every step.
