HI!

After completing BDS, students can pursue various surgical specializations at the postgraduate level through MDS or other recognized programs. Here are the top surgery focused options:

1) MDS in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

2) MDS in Periodontology ( Minor surgery )

3) Fellowships / Diplomas in Surgical Dentistry

You cannot directly join MS after BDS. Those are reserved for MBBS graduates. However, MDS Oral Surgery overlaps with some surgical disciplines.

Hello Aspirant,

After completing BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery), if you're interested in surgical courses at the master's level, you have several options depending on whether you want to stay within dentistry or shift toward general medical or cosmetic surgery.

Some MDS (Master of Dental Surgery) – Surgical Specializations:

These are the main surgery-related specializations in MDS:

1. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Most popular surgical course after BDS

Focus: facial trauma, orthognathic surgery, cleft lip/palate, cysts, tumors, TMJ surgeries, implants

Duration: 3 years

2. Periodontology (limited surgical aspect)

Focus: gum surgeries, periodontal flap surgeries, grafting

Not fully surgical like OMFS but includes minor oral procedures

3. Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge (surgically assisted rehabilitation)

Includes implantology and surgically restoring lost teeth and facial structures.

4. Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics

Not majorly surgical, but involves minor surgical procedures like apicoectomy

Hello Aspirant,

Several options exist for specialization through master's level courses for surgery after completing BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery). Some of the most common are:

  1. MDS in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery - Is focused on surgical procedures performed on the face, mouth, jaws, or neck.
  2. MDS in Periodontology - Has surgical means to treat gum disease and perform dental implants.
  3. MDS Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics - Includes minor oral surgeries related to root canals or restorative work.
  4. MDS in Oral Pathology & Microbiology - Is not very surgical but helps the surgical fields because of diagnostics.
  5. MS in General Surgery (abroad) - Some universities abroad accept BDS graduates (for General Surgery) and may qualify you for this program and broaden your surgical training.

Hello Aspirant,

After BDS, you can pursue master's courses in surgery-related fields like MDS  which is the most direct surgical path. Other options include Fellowship in Oral Implantology, Aesthetic Surgery, Cleft Lip & Palate Surgery, and Laser Dentistry, focusing on surgical dental specialties.
