The procedure is quite same if you have not done btech. For transition to graphic design you would have to:

Learn to communicate visually in two dimensions
Learn about using line, shape, imagery, color, and typography to communicate a message and a mood
Learn the right software, currently the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign mainly)
