Each and every MBA aspirant would like to know which B-school offers the best placements and also the salary offered before choosing a college. Almost all the top MBA colleges display this information on their websites. However, some of the B-schools that don’t fall within the top 100 sometimes give information in such a manner that an MBA aspirant may end up believing some statistics doctored to paint a rosy picture about the college.
To make an informed decision you should only rely on credible information filed with regulatory bodies. All approved B-schools are mandated to submit data to the regulatory agencies like AICTE or the UGC. They also voluntarily submit such data to the ranking agency of the Central education ministry, the National Institutional Ranking Framework (https://www.nirfindia.org/Home) (NIRF). Besides NIRF, there are credible private agencies like Careers360. The Careers360 ranking depends on data from the institutions’ websites and mandatory disclosures made to AICTE, NIRF and NAAC; information submitted to the UGC; institutes’ placements brochures etc.
Placement reports have to be assessed mainly on the following factors:
Average or median salary: The median salary reflects the quality of placements. Don’t give importance to the highest package as it may be an offer made to an exceptionally well rounded candidate or may be an international placement converted into Indian rupees. The median salary will give you a better picture of all the placements and the average salary across the batch that has been placed.
Percentage of class placed: A college may just have a fraction of its student placed to show a high average salary. Hence, it is important to understand the class size and how many have been placed. However, in the best B schools, a lot of students may prefer to join a family business or make a start-up. So, you should also take the figure of those students who opted out of placement while determining the placement statistics.
