For GATE you have to give more importance to your core concepts, so while selecting a book you have to consider whether it is updated to the current GATE standard,simplicity of the language and you have to verify if there are any errors.For Engineering Mathematics you may follow B.S Grewal,For your core  subjects you may follow "Chemical Engineering for GATE " by Ram Prasad.
