as per the cutoff to NITs of the previous years, you have a good chance to secure a seat in some of the NITs, however you are eligible for a seat in branches such as Biotechnology etc.
Speaking in terms of whether to take a lower branch in NIT or to take CSE branch in a private college is a personal decision. There are many aspects to as to why you would want to choose either, some private colleges have a higher tuition fees whereas in NIT the tuition fees would be moderate. It also depends on the preference of branch for the student.

You may join any branch like Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical or Metallurgy in some average NIT like MANIT Bhopal, NIT Jamshedpur, MNIT Jaipur, VNIT or SVNIT Surat, NIT Raipur, NIT Silchar or for that your Home State NIT, which has both good infrastructure, faculty as well as placements. You may even secure some of the Good IIITs or GFTIs.
Most of these NITs gave a great and competitive culture besides providing effective engineering education and opportunities in both the Core and Non Core sector.
