Hi Aspirant,
For MTech positions in related fields, the ranks may be expected to be low or high depending on the institution.
Most of the institution offering a master degree in life science stream, accept GATE XL rank. Birthday is also depended on what area of research you are interested in.
Remember all CSIR-JRF qualified people are eligible for applying for PhD (not for masters) anywhere in India. But make sure CGPA is decent as well. GATE usually exclusively for getting a master degree positions, be it MSc or MTech you may utilise the GATE score to get admission in really good institutes. Best IITs usually accept more than 700 score out of 1000. Its validity is for 3 years so the same can be utilised for PhD positions just after masters. Ranks of the score so will give you the benefit of getting shortlisted but if you are mtech then CGPA more than 7 is enough in most IITs.
Hope it helps!
Good Luck!
