Suspend the magnet freely in the earth's magnetic field. The end that points north direction is the north pole of the magnet. The south pole of earth's magnet is situated in the geometric North pole. Hence the north pole of a magnet points the north direction. Usually the manufacturer puts a small dot on the end which is a north pole. Seeing that you can identify it.
