Course Overview

The course is a foundation course of the intermediate level for engineering students who want to build a stronghold on the basics of Mechanical engineering, including concepts of the strength of materials and the deformability of various structures and the constituent materials. The candidates will learn to predict the failure and the deformation in structures used to build mechanical structures, like elastic, viscoelastic and plastic elements.

The candidates will be taught the ways of analyzing structural assemblages of various types, using the equations of geometric compatibility, static equilibrium, and constitutive material response. The Mechanics of Deformable Structures: Part 1 programme is the second course of a series having three parts, and this part is specially designed to give an introduction to the behaviour of viscoelasticity of a deformable structure, i.e. over the course of time.

The objective of the programme also covers the pattern in which a structure changes if the load applied exceeds the permissible ability of the elastic limit, known as the plasticity of the material. In the end, a candidate will be able to apply analytical methods and perform calculations related to the subject.

What you will learn

Knowledge of engineering

After completing the Mechanics of Deformable Structures: Part 1 programme, students will be able to:

  • Formulate equilibrium equations in structural assemblages.
  • Understand the formulation of elastic-perfectly-plastic models for a material response.
  • Use static equilibrium equations to analyze structures and their loads.
  • Use free-body diagrams to build equations of equilibrium.
  • Model and analyze load along the structural axis, bending of beams, and torsion in shafts.
  • How to identify the constraints of geometry.
  • Predict the mechanical operation of statically determinate and indeterminate assemblages.
  • Formulate equations of compatibility in assemblages of different structures.
  • Analyze the factors that affect plasticity and Viscoelasticity and their long-term impacts.
  • Usage of constitutive material response for the analysis of various structures.

Who it is for

The Mechanics of Deformable Structures: Part 1 course is structured for candidates who are:

  • Mechanical engineers who want to build notions of equilibrium in solid mechanics.
  • Professionals working in the mechanical engineering field want to ensure the performance of the structures to be built.
  • Pursuing a mechanical engineering foundation to perform a mechanical function without fail.
