Course Overview

RICE University in collaboration with edX education environment has designed a special course on defining DNA and its importance. The course will explore the role of DNA possessing its code and carrying genetic information. The course will explore the importance of DNA by its identification as well as the mechanisms programmed in the code discovered to date. The course will progress towards the discovery and growth of biological sciences owing to DNA starting as the fundamental unit.

The DNA: Biology’s Genetic Code course will explore the structure of DNA along with its mode of packaging, replication and manipulation mechanisms. The course will cover several offerings such as video lectures, case studies, molecular models and research articles along with assessment requirements such as homework and a final exam for completion. The DNA: Biology’s Genetic Code certification course is planned as an intermediate course requiring prerequisites from the candidate such as high school-level biology and chemistry and will run for a duration of 6 weeks. The self-paced programme provides two enrolment options; paid and free. In the paid mode, the learners will be provided with a certificate and unlimited access. In the free mode, they will be given access only for a limited duration.

Eligibility Criteria

Education

The candidate enrolling for the program needs to have a good knowledge of high school chemistry and biology at school level and already completed the edX provided coursework BIOC300.1x Proteins: Biology's Workforce or at least should possess bright knowledge on the structure of proteins and its functions.

Certification qualifying details

With the paid programme of study offering a verified certificate, the coursework will test the and evaluate the candidates with four main requirements of video based questions, weekly quizzes, weekly homework and a final exam which contributes to the final score in its own weightage and the candidate must score at least 60 % to receive the certificate of completion.

What you will learn

Knowledge of genetics

This course on DNA: Biology’s Genetic Code will be exploring the following areas:

  • The candidate will learn the methods to identify DNA as genetic material.
  • The candidates will understand the structure of DNA and packaging of it into the cell.
  • The candidate will gain knowledge of impact caused by DNA packaging in higher organisms and epigenetic passage of information without structural change in DNA.
  • The candidate will learn about the location specific expression of DNA.
  • The candidate will learn the machinery used in DNA replication with a very low error rate.
  • The candidate will down about the timing and origin place used for DNA replication.
  • The candidate will understand the mechanisms used for preserving linear DNA forms.
  • The candidate will learn about the damages how DNA structure is affected by various types of damage and how it progresses around.
  • The candidate will learn to amplify DNA sequences through procedures along with base sequence determination.
  • The candidates will learn about the enzymes that are used for DNA fragmentation.
  • The candidate should learn about the methods for recombining DNA segments from various sources.
  • The candidates will learn to recombine DNA into cells(including human cells) in several ways.

Who it is for

This course on DNA: Biology’s Genetic Code will help the following candidates in the following areas:

  • College students in science disciplines interested in exploring DNA studies and its importance in biotechnology.
  • High school studies with good biology and chemistry knowledge wishing to pursue their studies in DNA sciences.
