The Department of Computer Science, Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, Surat, came into existence in 1998 as one of the reputed constituent institutions with a zeal for promoting computer science education and research. This Surat-based department in the vigorous city of Gujarat offers focused learning environments on the compact 0.688-acre campus. The department comes under the approval of AICTE. The department has a faculty of 13 devoted members ensuring that each student is given the desired attention in its two postgraduate programs. The institute is co-educational and admits students from all sections of society to create an atmosphere of togetherness.
The Department of Computer Science has various modern facilities available for supporting students in their academic pursuits. It has a departmental library of its own, which has nearly 4,000 books and a large number of CDs covering different aspects of computer science, in addition to the central library of the university. The DCS Computer Centre is a centre of excellence. It supports a campus-wide LAN based on 2 Gbps fibre optic backbone supporting 1,200 users. The R&D lab in the department has 162 IBM machines, which give an excellent exposure of the latest technology to the students. The department has nine well-equipped classrooms, out of which four are theatre-type and three have interactive boards, for conducting academic discussions and presentations. Wi-Fi coverage, sports facilities, a cafeteria, on-campus banking facilities - all these contribute to a self-contained learning environment.
There are two full-time PG programmes offered by the Department of Computer Science: Master of Computer Applications (MCA) and Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications. While the two-year MCA course provides in-depth knowledge of advanced computing concepts, one year PGDCA aims at imparting a focused curriculum to its students who intend to upgrade their computer application skills. Both have an intake capacity of 120 students each, totalling 240 seats annually, which means that the intake is pretty significant, underlining the commitment of the department towards meeting the growing need for skilled IT professionals in the region and beyond.
