FCRI stands for the Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi is one of the constituent colleges of the Tamilnadu Dr.J.Jayalalithaa Fisheries University. This illutrious organisation was founded in June 1977 for the promotion of fisheries education and research in India. The institute is located at Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, and this makes the institute to encompass 50-acre land space that favors teaching and research on aquatic sciences. FCRI has a wide training portfolio comprising of 28 courses in 3 degree levels with its programs open for both undergraduate and post graduate students. The institute has an enrolment of 315 students and the faculty strength of 25 thus the students are provided quality education and individual attention in the various specialized areas of fisheries science.
FCRI recognizes its responsibility to ensure that its students have the best equipment that will augment their learning. The institute has top notch laboratory that incorporates specialized laboratory such as the Referral Lab for Aquatic Animal Health and the Referral Lab for Fish Quality Monitoring and Certification. These labs provide students with the practical training in modern research and quality assurance techniques. Equally notable is the Shore Laboratory Campus with marine engines and navigation workshops, fishing boats and outboard engines, net repair facilities, and a marine biology laboratory. fcda accreditations & members FOR THE SS COMFORT and CONVENIENCE OF THE STUDENTS , FCRI has two distinct hostel sections for boys and girls respectively. There are two domicile hostels the Boys Hostel Complex situated in the main campus holds 106 students and the Ladies Hostel Complex at the Staff Campus in Teachers Colony holds 83 female students.
The institute provides all round scholarly courses to meet all the sectors in fisheries science. Currently at undergraduate level, FCRI offers the Bachelors of Fisheries Science those is abbreviation known as B.F.Sc. For postgraduate studies, the institute offers many M.F.Sc programmes in niche areas including; Aquaculture, Fisheries Resource Management, Fisheries Economies, Fisheries Extension, Fish Processing Technology, Fishing Technology and Fisheries Engineering, Aquatic Environment Management, Fish Quality and Management, and Aquatic Animal Health.
