About National Institute of Locomotor Disabilities, Kolkata

The National Institute of Locomotor Disabilities was established in the year 1978 and is one of the premier autonomous institutes located in Kolkata, West Bengal. It is located at B T Road, Bonhooghly. This institute is especially developed for the field of locomotor disabilities. NILD offers physiotherapy and prosthetics & orthotics courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, there are four such courses under this discipline. This institution, basically much committed to education and research in Rehabilitation Science, follows the co-educational system and admits students from every walk of life.

National Institute of Locomotor Disabilities has a plethora of facilities that enhance the learning process of the students. The library of this institute, started with the college in the year. 1978, is a very important component for learning, teaching, and research. It provides services with computerised data on orthopedically handicapped persons, internet facilities, and specialised information dissemination services in areas like Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, and Prosthetics & Orthotics. Departmental laboratories are available in the campus, which are necessary in terms of practical experience for courses related to locomotor disabilities. Facilities for sports exist to ensure the students' physical well-being. Separate hostels for boys and girls are also available to make the stay comfortable for out-station students.

NILD is presently offering four full-time courses, thereby showing a very focused approach to education in the area of locomotor disabilities. The undergraduate and postgraduate course portfolios have two undergraduate programs. Bachelor of Physiotherapy and Bachelor of Prosthetics and Orthotics, and two postgraduate programs in Master of Physiotherapy in Orthopaedics and Master of Prosthetics and Orthotics.

For all courses, NILD conducts admissions on the basis of national-level entrance tests. Application Process

The application process for all programs at NILD, Kolkata comprises similar steps:

1. National-level Entrance Test: Candidates shall appear for the respective national-level entrance tests on the chosen program (BPT, BPO, MPT, or MPO).

2. Application Form: The eligible candidates must fill in the NILD application form after the entrance test notification of results. The application form will most probably be available on the official NILD website.

3. Document Submission: Applicants need to submit some documents along with the application. These are:

  • Entrance exam score card
  • 10th and 12th standard mark sheets
  • Graduation mark sheets (for PG applicants)
  • Category certificates (if applicable)
  • Any other certificate as specified by the institute

4. Admission Test/Interview: If required, shortlisted candidates are to sit for another admission test or interview at NILD.

5. Merit List: Based on the scores in the entrance exam and in additional tests/interviews (if any), a merit list of selected candidates shall be prepared by NILD

Degree-wise Admission Process

BPT (Bachelor of Physiotherapy): NILD has 30 seats in BPT. The admission into this program is based on a national-level entrance test. The BPT program imparts knowledge and skills in physiotherapy as related to locomotor disabilities

BPO (Bachelor of Prosthetics and Orthotics): A maximum of 28 seats are offered for the BPO program. Similar to the BPT, admission is by the national-level entrance exam. Important skills in prosthetics and orthotics are imparted to students in this course, with reference to rehabilitation of locomotor disabilities.

MPT Orthopaedics (Master of Physiotherapy in Orthopaedics): There are 4 seats available for this specialized postgraduate program at NILD. Admission is via a national-level entrance test for MPT. It attempts to upgrade the skill of students in the area of orthopaedic physiotherapy.

MPO (Master of Prosthetics and Orthotics): The admissions to the MPO program are via a national-level entrance test. This postgraduate course aims to provide advanced study in prosthetics and orthotics.
