Indian Institutes of Technology, popularly known as IITs, are a group of engineering institutes that offer BTech and MTech courses across diverse specialisations. Studying at an IIT is considered very respectable because of the tough admission procedure and reputation of these institutes. IIT faculties are known for their state-of-the-art infrastructure, qualified faculty, well-researched curriculum, and promising placement opportunities.
Graduates from IITs are considered highly educated and qualified engineers and often demand competitive salaries. However, apart from IITs, some other colleges and universities have stood out from the rest. These institutes offer decent faculties and placement procedures.
In this article, we will discuss some of the ways in which you can succeed in engineering even if you are not from an IIT. These tips will be helpful for candidates who are unable to study engineering at an IIT.
IITs are a group of prestigious engineering institutes in India that were established as Institutes of National Importance by the Parliament of India. IITs are considered the pinnacle of engineering education in India and offer excellent engineering education. Some of the prominent IITs are IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Bombay, and IIT Kharagpur.
To apply for admission at IITs, students have to appear for JEE Main examination. After clearing JEE-Mains students can appear for JEE Advanced which is considered amongst the toughest examinations in India. After clearing the examination, students need to appear for the counselling sessions conducted by the colleges.
While it may not be possible to get the same level of engineering education without an IIT. However, not all successful engineers are from IITs. Every year, millions of students appear for the JEE examinations in India, but only some are successful. There are some ways in which non-IIT students can succeed and some of them are discussed below.
Apart from IITs, several engineering institutes offer good facilities, infrastructure, and promising placement opportunities. While the quality of education may not be as good as an IIT, it will still prepare the students for a successful career as an engineer. Some of the prominent engineering institutes other than IIT are listed below -
Engineering is a discipline that requires more than attending college lectures. There are a variety of resources available for the students. It provides the students with immediate access to various research papers, theses, and concepts. All these resources are very helpful for gaining practical knowledge. These will be more helpful Engineering students should also be aware of technological advancements happening in and around the world.
Faculty is what makes a college exceptional. Attending online lectures of IIT professors can contribute significantly to engineering success. NPTEL is an online platform where professors upload their lectures. Students can enrol in a course depending on their interests; there are various courses available on different engineering topics.
While good theoretical knowledge is vital for engineering, without proper practical knowledge and experience, it may not be as beneficial. Engineering is a highly practical field that requires hands-on experience and skills to be successful. Internships can be a great way for students to get the necessary job-specific skills and experiential knowledge. Various companies also offer summer internships and recruit students through on-campus placements.
IITs have short-term courses across various engineering topics. These courses range from 1 week to 6 months, depending on the courses and charge a nominal fee. Short-term courses from IIT are a great way to learn from qualified faculties at IIT. Some of the popular courses offered by IITs are Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Data Science, Robotics, and Generative AI.
To conclude, success in engineering is possible even if the student is not from an IIT. Choosing alternative engineering colleges, learning from online sources, and attending short-term courses and internships are more than enough to become qualified engineers. While IIT is the best engineering institute in India, not all successful engineers are from IIT.
