What is Korean

Hangugo aka Korean is an underrated language in India. Yes, it is true that Korean language is not used for many purposes in India, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t have any opportunity if you learn Korean language. In fact, as per the new education policy of India, the government has included Korean language as a new language among all other foreign languages like Japanese, German, and French etc.

The government added Korean as a new language because the recent count says that there are around 60 million Korean speakers in this world. From new businesses to new startups and companies, Korea is becoming a hub for all these activities. With the increase in Korean speakers among these companies and businesses, Korean language translators are in high demand at the moment. So, if your favorite language is Korean and if you are interested in studying Korean language, then feel free to take up the course because with this demand of Korean language translators, you’ll have a high chance of getting into a good job both in India and abroad.

Now, to be honest, since Korean language is a new language added by the Indian government to the new education policy, there are not many universities in India that provide Korean language courses. There are only a handful of universities and institutes across the country that provide Korean Language courses. Some of the well-known institutes are: CKS under JNU, Ramjas College, St. Stephen’s College, Jamia Millia Islamia, Manipur University, Bangalore University, Christ University, Dr. BR Ambedkar University, and University of Kolkata etc.

Eligibility Criteria (UG & PG) of Korean

To pursue BA in Korean language

Candidates must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks in their 10+2.
English as a main subject is recommended, however, it is not absolutely necessary.

To pursue MA or M.Phil. in Korean language

Candidates must have completed BA in Korean language with a minimum of 45% marks overall.

For Ph.D. in Korean Studies

Candidates must have passed their MA or M.Phil. in Korean language with a minimum of 45% marks overall.
To do Ph.D. in Korean Studies, it is recommended to gain some work experience in a relevant field, before pursuing the course. However, it is not absolutely necessary.

For Diploma

Anybody can opt to learn Korean language after completing 10+2.
Sometimes, some institutes do ask for English as a main subject, but most institutes don’t, and you can go for it after your 10+2 exam.

Korean Language Entrance Exams

For this course, you’ll have to pursue a BA degree at first, followed by MA, M.Phil. and Ph.D., in case you want to go for higher studies. For getting into a BA course for foreign language, there is no specific exam for that. It actually depends on you. If you want to take another BA course and select Korean language as an elective subject, then you can go for it and give a relevant entrance exam for the course. However, there are no entrance exams if you wish to study only the Korean language. Students are basically selected according to their 10+2 score and if you have good marks, then they can get admitted to a top university in India that provides Korean language courses. And, if you plan to go for another BA course and select Korean language as one of the elective subjects, then these are few exams to check

JNUEE- This exam is conducted by JNU. You can go for this exam as JNU is one of the universities that provides BA, MA, M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Korean Language.
DUET- Qualifying DUET will help you get into Delhi University or any other institute that comes under Delhi University that teaches Korean Language.
JMIEE- JMIEE is conducted by Jamia Millia Islamia. You can also go for this exam as JMI has recently introduced Korean language as one of the full time BA courses under their foreign language department.
CUET- CUET is organized by Christ University. They also have a very good course structure for Korean Language and if you are interested, then feel free to apply to this university.

Remember that most universities, be it public or private, accept students for foreign language by going through their 10+2 scorecard. The entrance exams mentioned above are mainly for the purpose of going for a degree in a different course and selecting Korean language as one of the elective subjects.

Scope of Korean in India and Abroad

One of the other reasons for GOI to introduce Korean as a new language is that Korea, at the moment, is the 7th largest export economy in the world. So many Korean MNCs have set their branches in India, as well as throughout the globe. In fact, so many essentials that we use every day are made by a Korean Company. Not only that, Korean culture is also something that is widely spread throughout the country and also all over the world. PSY, who made the world famous “Gangnam Style”, is a Korean artist? On top of that, the rise of various Korean cultures like k-pop etc., brings in a huge influence in India as well as in the whole world. With the increase in businesses and negotiations, big Korean MNCs in India like LG, Hyundai, and Samsung etc. always look for Korean Translators and Advisors in India for business purposes. And just because there are not many Korean language experts in the country, you have a pretty high chance of getting an excellent job after your studies.

For studying BA. Hons in Korean, a candidate should have scored well in CUET 2024. A candidate who is going for any foreign language course needs to appear for a language test(English) and General Test.

According to the prospectus 2024 of JNU, a students needs to fill an form after the declaration of CUET 2024 Result. The result has been declared. The date of filling the JNU Form is yet to be announced.
