Ayush Maurya 17th Dec, 2021

Hello there

Good to see that at a very early age you are determined to crack UPSC CSE examination in your first attempt.

And i would suggest you to firstly complete your class 11th and 12th with good academic grades as they matters a lot and do that stream in which you feel interested and can give much of the time.

You can start your better preparation from your graduation onwards but still if you want to prepare from class 11 onwards when you can firstly clear your basics of NCERT from 6th to 12th level as they are very much important for the preliminary examination as you must be knowing. As this would be enough because you have to maintain your class 11th and 12th grades to so firstly do this thing and from your first year of graduation you can start with some standard books and can excel in your preparation.

Best of luck!

Thank you!

pdwords Student Expert 27th Aug, 2021
Hello,

UPSC is conducted in three phases mainly Prelims, Mains and Interview

Since you specifically asked about Mains,it is the second stage, it's more of a subjective type, you are required to write answers for Four General Studies Paper such as

GS-I includes Indian Heritage and Culture,History and Geography of the World and Society,

For History , Class XI NCERT book with India's struggle for Independence by Bipin Chandra,India after Independence by Bipan Chandra,History of Medieval India by Satish Chandra. For Geography refer World Geography and Geography of India by Majid Hussain, GC Leong's Physical and Human Geography with NCERT Class XI book.

GS-II includes Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations,

For Polity and International Relations , refer Indian Polity by Lamikanth,India's Foreign Policy by Rajiv Sikri

GS-III includes Technology, Economic Development, Bio-Diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management,

For Economics refer Indian Economy by Ramesh Singh, read ARC report along with Economic Survey and Fiscal Budget.

GS-IV includes Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude

For Ethics refer a book named Lexicon by Niraj Kumar, also you can go through study material of IGNOU.

Remember to keep your resources minimal, read one book many a times instead of many a book one time, as you have to retain so much of information so rely on only limited yet trustworthy resources and revision is the only key for remembrance.

Two Optionals to be chosen among the following-

Agriculture
Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science
Anthropology
Botany
Chemistry
Civil Engineering
Commerce & Accountancy
Economics
Electrical EngineeringSyllabus
Geography
GeologySyllabus
History
Law
Management
Mathematics
Mechanical Engineering
Medical Science
Philosophy
Physics
Political Science & International Relations
Psychology
Public Administration
Sociology
Statistics
Zoology

Other than this, you can also consider literature subjects for optionals such as Assamese,Bengali,Bodo,Dogri,Gujarat,Hindi,Kannada,Kashmiri,Konkani,Maithili,Malayalam,Manipuri,Marathi,Nepali,Oriya,Punjabi,Sanskrit,Santhali,Sindhi,Tamil,Telugu,Urdu,English

Two Language Paper which is only qualifying by nature, each is of 300 Marks, and candidates need to get merely 25% that is 75 Marks

One Essay

In total there are nine papers in Mains, except the two language papers , each paper is of 250 marks, total adds up to 1750 marks.

I am in class 9th I want to become an IAS officer but I have no idea about this UPSC exam can you help me in this field to prepare for this exam . and which subjects are important to read. how can I prepare for this from now. I think you will help in this

sanjanamore76 19th Aug, 2021

Hello Sneha,

Nice to know that you have decided your career field at an early age. IAS is a prestigious position with a lot of responsibilities still lakhs of students aspire for it each year.

First, I will tell you about UPSC examination. So UPSC conducts examination in 3 phases:

1) Preliminary Examination - Objective type questions with 2 papers (Qualifying stage so marks will not be added in final marks)

2) Mains Examination - 9 papers (out of which 2 will be of qualifying nature) - Subjective type questions - Marks will be counted

3) Personality Test - Interview stage

This total process will be of 2025 marks in total which will be counted for ranking and according to your rank you will get your service.

As you said you are in 9th std, I won't suggest you to start the serious preparation for UPSC from now onwards because preparing for UPSC needs some maturity which develops with time. You can start gradually after 12th with the proper studies. But you can do 1 thing now is that just concentrate on your school studies and clear all your concepts because they will be your base for studying for UPSC. And if possible you can try to make a habit of reading newspaper. Just try to read it for overall understanding and knowledge to make a habit and create awareness and don't read it from UPSC exam point of view.

Just Enjoy your school life at this moment with your studies.

All the Best!!

Hope this Helps...

which is the best course of Bsc. I can do to became an IAS officer as i completed my 12th with 91% by pcb and want to choose botany or zoology in mains optional exams?

Karam Vir 14th Aug, 2021

Hey,

You can pursue any course in bachelors for taking up the IAS exam. However, as you are already clear, that you want to opt for Botany/Zoology as an optional subjects, then, it would be best if you figure this out and pursue your bachelors in this field only. Optional subject plays a very important role in IAS exam. Even if you are confused in this, you can better go for B.SC (Zoology, Botany, Chemistry). Because in this you would be able to study both Botany and Zoology and at the end you can choose subject of your choice as an optional.

hello I am divya. now I am studying 10th class. I am confusing what to take MPC pr BiPC after my 10th to become an IAS officer. what graduation I have to took for my 10th. finally I need a help that what will I take for my 10th class to my IAS Officer job. thank for seeing and also answering

pdwords Student Expert 13th Aug, 2021
Hello,

Firstly the eligibility criteria for appearing in UPSC is passed graduation in any discipline from a recognized University, there is no requirement of specific aggregate, you need to attain 21 years as on 1st August of the appearing year, and can apply even in the final year, see there is no guarantee that choosing a specific stream will make you successful in UPSC, in fact the graduation stream isn't a criteria as such when it comes to qualifying this reason, the reason if you look at previous year toppers they come from as diverse backgrounds as that of engineering, medical, science, commerce etc, now none of these fields as such has any overlap with at least the general studies paper majorly, hence choosing MPC or BiPC is more dependent on your areas of interest, skills, aptitude, and the kind of job profile you're looking at apart from appearing in UPSC, say you're interested in technical field go for MPC, if you're interested in medical domain then choose BiPC, your graduation domain should only be in which you are interested to explore, and much more than anything else what is common for all candidates who qualify UPSC is their focus, dedication, planning, strategy, perseverance, hence go with a career of your choice, and it also helps when you have back up plans in case you want to appear for UPSC ahead in future since this exam is also very compeitive and at times unpredictable.

Hello there

I hope you are doing good in your life and it's a very good decision that you want to become an IAS officer and you must have completed your class 12th and that's why you are worrying that which degree I should pursue.

For this I want to tell you that to become eligible to give UPSC civil services examination you need not to worry about your degree stream because all the candidates are eligible to give UPSC civil services examination doesn't matters in whichever stream they completed their degree.

But I would suggest you one thing that if you want to prepare for UPSC CSE very seriously and delicately only to that then you can pursue Bachelor in Arts as it will help you you in preparing for UPSC civil services examination syllabus as most of the things gets covered in in Bachelor in Arts degree.

who takes more salary IAS officer or IFS officer

Niranjana 29th Jul, 2021

Hello,

Despite the fact that both services are of similar reputation, most UPSC Civil Services applicants choose the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) over the Indian Foreign Service (IFS). Even the highest UPSC test scorers seldom opt to enter the Foreign Service.

A diplomat's life may appear to be highly colourful and affluent. They generally reside in large houses with domestic help. They also have the opportunity to host and attend parties. In addition, unlike their IAS/IPS counterparts, IFS officials are not subject to political influence. When they are stationed overseas, they also have diplomatic immunity in most issues.

Due to greater allowances, the IFS officer pay structure is also higher than the IAS officer pay scale.

In contrast, IAS/IPS officials begin their careers in district headquarters and sub-divisional towns, which may be in distant locations.

As part of their duty, an IAS officer is required to travel often within their district, which may include visits to underdeveloped regions or places afflicted by insurgencies, among other things. During their early careers, an IAS or IPS officer's social life might be severely constrained. The Indian Administrative Service, on the other hand, is an all-India service, whereas the Indian Foreign Service is a central service.

Hope it helped

All the best!!
