Hello Prithyusha! It all depends upon your capabilities and how you perform on the field as it is a creative job and not something that can be analysed that way. Earnings depend on that only. Yes, you can pursue both with this. Hope this helps.

I want to become a world travel journalist ,what should I do?Undergraduate courses related to that or anything else.....??!!!

Anonymous 7th Nov, 2017

To become a world travel journalist, have the basic skills to succeed in this line.

Some of the skills are:

  • Start to socialize with people, be communicative with them, and understand their culture.
  • Become a story teller, but not the one in common.
  • Write blogs and experiences
  • Create your own writing style.
  • Look for new ways to present your ideas
  • Your content should be able to entertain, educate, and inform them.
  • Always look for feedback and be ready to face criticism, and be thankful for it.
  • Read what other are writing and find your genre from adventure travel, culinary travel, destination travel, theme travel, historic travel, dark tourism travel, hill station travel or budget travel. This will give a good hike to your identity.
  • Be a problem solver not a part of the problem as readers expect concrete information.
  • Initially you can expect a low pay but with increase in experience and specially skills you have money around you.
  • You may face a full time job problem. It’s important that you are a curious and perceptive traveller who is comfortable for any ups and downs. You should also be willing to pitch your ideas to an editor and be prepared to promote your work whenever possible. As a beginning travel writer, you will need to showcase writing talent and a zest for adventure, as well as an ability to sell your ideas and writing to editors.

There is as of no defined qualification. A good amount of experience will help you in this field.

Good Luck.

If I want to become a travel journalist, what course should I do?

Urvashi Dalal 1st Nov, 2017
Hi Travel Journalism is a very niche' and creative career. You have to be an explorer and a good writer, which is kind of crafty. You would be required to explore places, describe them along with fascinating photographs and convince readers to visit the place. You need to be impressive and expressive with your words. You would be required to develop a story with words so powerful yet simple that you can make the readers imagine themselves at the place they are reading about. It requires skills of words, photographs, and as a planner to present an itinerary. Apparently, there is no specialisation as Travel journalism offered by institutes, you can opt for a specialised Degree in Journalism. This will let you explore your writing capabilities, challenge you to explore language and communication skills, and will teach you to write for different mediums. You can also go for a degree in Mass Comm, wherein you would expand your knowledge base across other subject areas. Some of the top institutes, both UG and PG, to pursue your degree are, Asian College of Journalism, Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Xavier's Institute of Communication, Symbiosis International University, Delhi University, GGS IP University, Amity University, Jamia Millia Islamia. Each of the University has its own entrance exam to shortlist applicants. You can apply in any of the institutes depending on your preference for the programme. I am a PCM student in class 12. I wish to become a print journalist or writer. Which course and colleges are good?

Urvashi Dalal 27th Oct, 2017

Hey!
Well, as they say, you are destined to be the person you have decided to be. And if you are adamant about your decision to become a Journalist or a Writer, forget about your class 11 marks, and start preparing hard for the future entrance exams. Your class 11 marks and the subject problem is not a concern here. If you have passed 10+2, with minimum 55% marks, you are eligible to apply for most of the institutes offering Journalism programmes. But you must be ready to prepare very hard for the tests and during the course to complete your degree. Remember, from your graduation, you are building your profile, which will support you in your internship/placements.

Just an opinion, if you wish to be a Journalist in a print organisation, you must go for a Journalism programme rather than for a degree in Mass Communication. Although you will be taught Journalism in a Mass Comm degree as well.
Many institutes offer UG programme in Journalism and Mass Comm. Some of the details are,
1. Delhi University conducts DU DSJ in September- Offers five year integrated programme in Journalism
2. Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University conducts IPU CET in April- Offers Bachelors in Journalism and Mass Comm (BJMC)
3. Symbiosis International University conducts SET in May- offers BA in Mass Comm at Symbiosis Centre for Media and Communication
4. Christ University conducts Christ University BA CEP in April- Offers BA in Comm and Media
5. Amity University conducts Amity Entrance test in April- July (flexible dates)- Offers B.A. (Journalism & Mass Communication) across campuses

Regarding your next concern about the preparations and books, most of these exams have a similar structure, but the syllabus and pattern may differ from one institute to the other. Generally, it’s a two-part paper wherein the first part assess the language skills and the second part tests current affairs, general knowledge and media aptitude. Basis your scores of the test, institutes calls you for the selection rounds.

As you have already mentioned about your reading habits along with good language skills preparing for such exams must not be a problem. But you must keep practising your writing skills and develop a habit of learning new words every day. You read newspapers, start reading history books, and GK books as well. Such books are available in the market easily. You can try Success Master: Journalism and Mass Communication, Word Power made easy by Norman Lewis, and General Knowledge Digest by TMH.

You must refer to previous years sample papers of the test (if available on the website of the institute you are applying) to have an idea about the test structure and types of questions to expect in the test. Prepare well and you must succeed!
