How to get into merchant navy in india

Hello there,

Admission in merchant navy is through an entrance followed by a screening test and a main written examination. After clearing the test you'll need to clear medical and interview. After that you'll have to complete the ship-training course ,which is a short term course given to you regarding the basic training before the actual job.

Mandatory Clinical Test:

Other than physical observation, various numbers of Clinical Tests are carried out to make sure that all the Standards are met.

  1. Complete Blood Count (Hb, TWBC, ESR);
  2. Routine Urine(Albumin, sugar and microscopic);
  3. Blood Sugar;
  4. Audiometry;
  5. Vision Test (Distant, Near, Colour);
  6. X-ray of Chest; and
  7. Electrocardiogram (ECG).

Medical Condition considered before issuing Medical Certificate

The Following medical condition generally renders a person unfit for work at sea:

  1. Infectious and Parasitic Diseases- Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), Enteritis, Hepatitis (active or chronic, within 6 months), Typhoid, Malaria Lice, Scabies, Sexually Transmitted Disease or any other infectious or parasitic disease in its communicable or carrier state which would present a health hazard to other crew members or passengers.
  2. Malignant Neoplasms- Any malignancy currently receiving treatment.
  3. Endocrine, Nutritional and Metabolic conditions and Immunity Disorders- Diabetes Mellitus, Adrenal insufficiency, Immunosuppressive therapy, Obesity or any disease of the endocrinal gland.
  4. Disease of the Blood and Blood-forming organs- Anemia, Myelodysplasia, Splenomegaly or any significant disease of the haemopoietic system.
  5. Mental Disorders- Active Alcohol (substance abuse or dependence), acute psychosis, psychoneurosis major depression, Dementia or Personality disorder.
  6. Nervous System- Ataxia, Vertigo, Convulsive disorder, Epilepsy, Unsteadiness of gait, Post concussion syndrome, Stroke, Tremors, Migraine, Syncope, Epistaxis or Sinusitis.
  7. Oral Health- Mouth or gum Infection (until treated) or any Dental defects.
  8. Cardiovascular system- an aortic aneurysm, Arrhythmia, Hypertension, Coronary bypass grafting, Coronary angioplasty, Claudication, Myocardial infarction, Varicose veins, Chronic varicose ulcerations, thrombophlebitis, Haemorrhoids, Varicocele or any cases of High/Low blood pressure.
  9. Respiratory system- Bronchial Asthma, Chronic bronchitis, Pneumothorax (within 12 months), Tumour or Pulmonary Koch’s with less than 12 months treatment.
  10. Digestive system- Abdominal lump, Abscess, Appendicitis, Cholelithiasis, Diarrhoea, Gastric Ulceration, Haematemesis (within 3 months), Hepatitis (within 6 months), Jaundice, Pancreatitis, Peptic Ulcer, Cirrhosis of the Liver, Splenomegaly, Hepatomegaly or Fissure(Unless Operated).
  11. Genitourinary system- All cases of proteinuria, Glycosuria, Nephritis, Urinary obstructions (if not remediable), Renal or ureteric calculus, Removal of the kidney, Renal transplant, Renal insufficiency, Incontinence of urine, Prostatism ith retention, Urethral discharge or any Gynaecological conditions.
  12. Pregnancy
  13. Skin Condition- Al infection of the skin (until satisfactorily treated), Acute Eczema, Dermatoses (severe or uncontrolled), Manifestations of the systemic disease (eg. Lupus, allergy), Carcinoma or any Burn hindering the natural movement.

Merchant navy is the most exciting and lucrative course for youngsters. It offers commercial services. Merchant ships employ a huge number of workers to carry and deliver goods from one country to another.

Merchant navy as a profession is nothing but a treat if you are traveler at heart , it has has opportunities of roaming all around the globe and ensuring the sense of fulfillment and satisfaction apart from that it also demands you to be physically and mentally fit . It is profession not for the faint heart ,crisis in sea not only demands a calm but a brave soul too . Apart from that the salary is downright handsome.

It is quite challenging but also monetarily rewarding and satisfying.

Eligibility criteria :

Class 12 with PCM from recognised board.

Candidate has to be unmarried

Admission is through entrance test followed by a screening test and a main written examination. After clearing test there is an interview and a Medical test.

You also need to complete a ship training course prior to employment, it's a short term course and candidates are taught basic security concerns of voyaging.

hello aspirant,

you can join merchant navy right after you pass your 10+2 exam. you need to be an unmarried indian citizen , you need to have physics, chemistry and mathematics in your 10+2 course. there will be a entrance test by merchant navy, if you carck you will go through a ship training course.

another option yo join in merchant navy is doing diploma in nautical science from reputed institute. however you need to give your 100 percent. however I would suggest you go through the job perspective area of working in merchant navy before joining.

After completion of 12th class, interested candidates can appear for the Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test (IMU CET) or the All India Merchant Navy Entrance Exam.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility for joining merchant navy is finishing class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
Candidates have to be unmarried Indian citizens (male or female).
Normal vision is required but glasses up to plus or minus 2.5 may be allowed.
Admission is through an entrance followed by a screening test and a main written examination.
After clearing the test, there is an interview and a medical test.
You also need to complete a ship-training course prior to the employment. The course is generally short-term where the candidates are taught basic security concerns of voyaging.

hi,

yes you can join merchant navy after b.tech in mechanical engineering.  as mechanical and marine engineering has many subjects in common that will be easier for you to do this course.

you can do 1 year Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) course after mechanical engineering   to enter merchant navy.

however select the college according where placement is really good.
