can a surgeon charge 35 lakh for a very time consuming procedure, such as open heart surgeryy

Subhrajit Mukherjee 27th Dec, 2021

India is known for its low cost heart surgeries. So in private hospitals the charges for the Open Heart Surgery ranges in between Rs. 1.25-2.5Lacs in total. So do you think its feasible?

Such high amounts usually won't charged in any operation just by the surgeon. Even process such as Kidney transplant is done in an average fee of Rs. 5-6 Lacs among which the doctor charges around Rs. 1 Lacs. So such high amounts are not most probably charged by any surgeon.

is it legal for a surgeon to charge whatever he thinks is fair for a surgery, if not then what is the amount till which he can charge

Subhrajit Mukherjee 27th Dec, 2021

The charge or the fees for a designated procedure is usually decided by the Hospital if the surgeon is attached to it. Now if he/she visits as a Guest Surgeon as per the request of the patients family, then the personal charges can be decided by the Surgeon. Although the charge is to be decided on the basis of the professional ethics and the average procedural cost. So its not like that a surgeon can ask a very large amount for a small procedure but usually its in average a charge which is affordable by the family and sometimes the surgeons from the point of view of humanity charges very feeble from poor patients. So this are very relative terms and nothing standardized figures can't be produced.

if a neuroendoscopy costs rupees 30 lakh, how much of it goes to the surgeon

Subhrajit Mukherjee 25th Dec, 2021

See this are very personal details which aren't disclosed by the Hospitals. For most of the cases, there are fees for the doctor who conducts a procedure. So there are fixed fees for the professionals and the entire amount charged don't only include the  Surgeon but it also include other charges such as Medications, OT charges, Medical Assistance charges, Bed fees, Hospital Facility charges, Anesthesiologist charges, Additional medical support charges etc. So the fees the surgeon gets can't be concluded from any pattern.

Goodnight :-)

Sohamsengupta8 23rd Jan, 2022

Hello student,

Sorry to say you but it is not professionally possible to offer such things from any Pharma companies. Maybe if there is some private things and for this reason This can happen. Obviously I am not telling that. But in general open doctors get commissions from pharmaceutical companies for promoting their  medicines. The amount of commission is obviously depends upon the popularity of this particular doctor in this locality. But the offer you have mentioned if quite impossible to provide by any local pharmaceutical companies.

i read in an article that there was a assistant surgeon in usa whose name was Harrison .T. Mu, who was a neurosurgeon. he charged 117000 dollars or approximatiely 87 lakh rupees for a surgery. why did he charge so much? is it legal

ERA MADARIA 17th Jan, 2022
Hi Student

Yes student it is legal to charge this much for a brain surgery. A brain surgery can cost upto $50000-$100000, the patient doesnt have a health insurance. The cost of the surgery depends on the complications in the braim surgery.

The cost you mentioned must be of a patient undergoing brain surgery with major complications  and he might not be having health insurance to cover the expense.
