Sohamsengupta8 14th Feb, 2021

Hello student

You have studied in Mumbai University and  your schooling is in Mumbai as a General category student but you have mentioned that your parents   belongs to OBC category, you are  in a fix to which category you will apply for UPSC. If your parents belongs to OBC creamy layer then no reservation is entitled to the candidates for any kind of job and education.

Creamy layer OBC candidate is treated as General category candidate. If parents  annual income is excess of rs 800000 this obc candidate treated as general category candidate.

So  you will apply for UPSC exam as a General candidate.

ginnisachdeva02_9364270 Student Expert 24th Mar, 2021

Hi Dipak,

As you mentioned you are pursuing Petroleum engineering, I would suggest you to write GATE exam as it is related to your domain. And you can grab a PSU if score good marks. You can have two attempts to write the exam, one in third year and next in the final year. Or you can go to any IIT or any other good college to pursue M.Tech, if you are not interested in government job. To know more about Gate, visit here:

Whenever I say that I want to become an IAS and then people say "OMG u have to give UPSC exam !! " So is UPSC so hard ? , if yes why ?

Anirudh Singh 20th Jan, 2021

Hi.

UPSC is a difficult exam no doubt but what makes it or any national level exam difficult? Competition and Paper Pattern. Other than that it is a not a rocket science to clear an exam, many students all over India are able to do it. So can you.

A few factors on what makes it seem difficult:

Pattern of Examination

Factor No. 1 to figure out How Tough is the IAS Exam. UPSC examination in India consists of 3 levels or stages.

  • The Prelims Exam
  • Mains Exam
  • Interview

To reach the next level, a candidate has to clear the previous level. And there is no secret that as the level changes, the level of difficulty also rises. The most difficult task is to crack the interview because at the last stage i.e. interview not only your knowledge is put to test but your overall personality and ability to deal with practical challenges as well.

Syllabus to Cover

The second factor that showcases the complexity of the exam is its huge syllabus. Indeed, UPSC is tough as far as its syllabus is considered. The diversity of subjects demands more determination and long study hours. Since the role of an IAS is not just limited to a particular field, the subjects to be covered for this examination contains varied streams. You need to learn each and every subject, whether you like it or not.

In short, it covers-

  • Lengthy syllabus
  • Diversity of subjects.
  • Need long study hours
  • Overall knowledge rather than expertise in one particular subject.

Passing Marks to Score

Unlike school or college exams, the passing score is not just 33%. UPSC is the race of winning one of India’s most sought designations. If we analyze the past success rate in UPSC exams, we get an idea of whether the IAS exam is tough or easy.

The cut off marks in the UPSC exam is usually low. The reason being the level of competition is very high. Everyone wants to try their luck and abilities to break into the civil services. Each year there are lakhs of people appear for UPSC prelims exam and only 1/4 th i.e. 25% of them pass. Out of them, those who qualify the mains exam are even less up to 15%. However, the rate of success is relatively high at the interview stage.

Overall the passing percentage in the UPSC exam is less than 1%. Yes, you read it correctly it is just 1%.

Time Taken For Preparation

You can’t just do it in a month or two. It takes at least a year to prepare satisfactorily for the UPSC exams. It is not possible to cover the hefty syllabus overnight. Proper planning, dedicated preparation is a must.

Good Luck

how many marks required in upsc exam to become IAS for a general candidate.oc caste?

ADITYA KUMAR Student Expert 17th Jan, 2021

Hi

In UPSC civil services examination only your mains and interview marks are considered for the final list . Now mains is conducted for 1750 marks while interview is conducted for 275 marks. So, total marks is 2025 marks for merit list preparation.

It is quite difficult to predict the marks required by you to get into IAS as it depends upon a number of factors like the number of vacancy for the post of IAS, kind of marks obtained by candidates in mains and interview etc.

But yes,
When we go through previous year trend then you should try to get at least 950 + marks to get into IAS.

For example,

can a candidate with cardiovascular decease declared fit in upsc exam?

Subhrajit Mukherjee 3rd Jan, 2021

There are quite a number of posts in UPSC. As you have not mentioned any of it. I am assuming you are asking physical fitness criteria for IAS. So the IAS physical fitness criteria are-

  • There is no height, weight and chest girth minimum requirement as such for candidates for the IAS, unlike the technical services. However, if the candidates’ measurements are disproportionate as regarded by the medical board, the candidates can be hospitalized for investigation and chest X-ray can be taken. Please note the technical services have certain minimum requirements.
  • Candidates should have a proper vision in the eyes. Corrections permitted are spectacles, CL and refractive surgery like LASIK, ICL, IOL, etc. Those who have myopia with macular degenerative changes will be declared unfit for service in the IAS. People with a squint in the eyes are fit for service. Night blindness is also not a ground for candidates to be declared unfit.
  • Blood pressure over 140/90 should be subjected to further testing in the hospital to ascertain whether the abnormal BP is temporary due to excitement, etc. and not an indication of any disease. Only candidates free from any complication of hypertension will be declared fit for service.
  • Only candidates free from any complication of diabetes mellitus will be declared fit for service.
  • The hearing ability of the candidate should be ‘good’ in each ear and he/she should also be free from any disease of the ear. In case of a defect, the candidate should be subjected to further tests to see if the defect can be remedied by a hearing aid or an operation.
  • Pregnant female candidates will be fit except for those services that require physical training. In such cases, the candidates will be declared fit after confinement.
  • Candidates’ teeth should be in ‘good order’.
  • The heart and lungs of the candidate should be fine.
  • There should not be any abdominal disease.
  • The feet, hands and limbs are well-formed and there should be no restriction on joint movements.
  • There should not be any congenital malformation or defect.
  • There should not be any sign of acute or chronic disease indicating an impaired constitution.
  • Candidates should bear marks of efficient vaccination.
  • The candidates should not have any communicable diseases.
  • Candidates with grade I haemorrhoids are declared fit.
  • Diseases like hernia, varicose veins, hydrocele, haemorrhoids, etc. are declared temporarily unfit and should be declared fit after successful surgery.
  • Candidates with malignancies at the time of entry to service are declared unfit.
  • Candidates with transplanted organs are declared unfit. An exception is made only for a corneal transplant.

So there is a chance that for cardiovascular disease, the candidate may not be declared to be fit .
