Most of the Engineering colleges of India offer admission through Entrance examinations. JEE MAIN is one of those engineering Entrance examinations and you can appear for that as there is no cap on minimum marks criteria. The eligibility criteria only asks for passing 12th with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and English as compulsory subjects. However there are other engineering Entrance examination like BITSAT, SRMJEE, VITEEE but these entrances ask for minimum marks in 12th like at least 75% or 60% aggregate marks in PCM. There are many state level Engineering Entrance exams like WBJEE, UPSEE, COMEDK, KCET, MHTCET, BCECE etc and you can appear for the examination of your domicile state and if only you meet the eligibility criteria.  But Jee Main has nothing to do with your 12th marks. For only admission to NITs, IIITs, CFTIs and For jee Advanced There is a criteria of having at least 75% aggregate score in 12th. And if you have 50% in 12th you can still appear for Jee Main but won't be able to get admission in the above mentioned Institutes.
