JEE mains is one of one of the toughest exam in India and you can cannot appear in a competitive exam with assumptions, ofcourse you can make smart strategies and skip topics which has less weightage as per previous trends but by leaving a topic you are giving chance to other lakhs candidates to beat you and leave you far behind them. Completing syllabus gives you confidence and makes you mentally ready for tackling any question which will be thrown at you.
I hope this helps.
Yes you still can score good marks after leaving application of derivative unit, because weightage of any particular topic in JEE mains exam is not fixed it is made by getting a probable idea from the past year records, most probably you can see the weightage for this topic it maybe approx 1 to 4 question max, even if you are living it then your chances of getting 80 are still good if you attempt all questions correct after leaving questions of this topic.
Best of luck.
